Eastern Liangmai Naga Body Opposes "German/Tiger Road" Project, Cites Ancestral Land Claims

Kangpokpi, 1 July 2025 —
The Eastern Liangmai Chief/Chairman Association (ELCCA) has issued a strong statement opposing the proposed construction of the so-called "German Road" or "Tiger Road," which aims to connect Kangpokpi to Churachandpur via Naga ancestral territories.

In a press communiqué released on July 1, 2025, the ELCCA categorically rejected what it described as the "wishlist" of the Kuki community, declaring that no such road—whether named German, Tiger, or Lion—has existed in their ancestral lands, either in the past or present. The association claimed that these names were fabricated and hold no legitimacy in the history, tradition, or land records of the region.

The ELCCA condemned any attempt to impose such infrastructure on what it considers Liangmai Naga territory, labeling it an "act of aggression and land grab." The association warned that any forceful or deceitful attempts to introduce the road project would be met with "unrelenting resistance." It cautioned that such actions could trigger widespread unrest and communal conflict, adding that any group or entity that ignored this warning would bear full responsibility for the consequences.

The association called on the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to act with wisdom and urgency, stressing that supporting or permitting the implementation of the Kuki community's so-called wishlist would endanger fragile inter-community relations and violate Naga territorial rights.

Further, the ELCCA demanded the immediate dismantling of all Suspension of Operation (SoO) camps of Kuki militant groups located near Naga-inhabited areas. According to the association, these camps pose a serious threat to peace and continue to create fear and insecurity among the local population.

Reaffirming their identity as a peace-loving community, the Eastern Liangmai chiefs declared they would not remain passive in the face of encroachment or provocation, asserting their right to protect their ancestral lands.
