Office of the
CHURACHANDPUR DISTRICT JOURNALISTS' UNION (CDJU)
Affiliated to
Manipur Hills Journalists' Union (MHJU)
Date: 14th Sept. 2025
CONDEMNATION STATEMENT
The Churachandpur District Journalists Union (CDJU) strongly condemns the harassment and intimidation of Thangchinlian Langel, Editor of The Lamka Times (a local daily newspaper), by personnel of the Assam Rifles and CRPF on 14th September, 2025. While Langel was covering a demonstration by youths outside the Churachandpur Police Station protesting the police's refusal to release some of those arrested, he was repeatedly intimidated and compelled to delete photos and videos he had taken. Despite identifying himself as a journalist and presenting his press card, Langel was subjected to coercive actions by security forces at Kangkap Centre, Lamka, and again by CRPF officers on Thangzam Road, Lamka.
The CDJU considers these actions a serious infringement on press freedom and an attempt to suppress journalistic coverage of a public protest and security forces' actions.
We demand that the authorities take strict action against those responsible for harassing Thangchinlian Langel and ensure journalists can perform their duties without fear of intimidation or coercion.
