TWO civilians were shot dead by a drunk soldier during a funeral in Kanpetlet Township, Chin State, according to local sources. The funeral was being held for victims of a military airstrike that had taken place a day earlier.
The tragic shooting occurred on October 25, when a soldier, reportedly intoxicated, fired his weapon recklessly during the service. Witnesses said the incident appeared to be unintentional. "One person said one thing, another said another. They said he was drunk and fell, and the gun went off. I don't know for sure," said a resident of Kanpetlet.
The victims of the shooting were identified as Ma Mar Si (16) and Ko Chaing Htan (27).
Just a day before, on October 24, the military council had conducted three airstrikes using two jet fighters on the wedding of a Chinland Defense Force (CDF–Kanpetlet) commander in Kanpetlet town. That attack killed three people, including a female CDF member, and injured at least 15 others.
The funeral for those killed in the airstrike was being held when the fresh tragedy unfolded.
