Kuki Inpi Manipur Rejects BJP Move to Form Popular Govt

Lamka, Feb 4, 2026: The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) has strongly opposed the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) reported move to form a so-called "popular government" in Manipur, calling the decision disturbing, provocative, and dangerous amid the ongoing fragile law and order situation in the state.

In a press release issued by Janghaolun Haokip, Secretary, Information and Publicity, Kuki Inpi Manipur on Tuesday, KIM said the formation of a popular government at this critical juncture would not bring peace or reconciliation but instead deepen existing divisions and instability.

The apex body of the Kuki tribes alleged that such a political arrangement would be Meitei-centric and incapable of addressing the aspirations and grievances of the Kuki-Zo people.

KIM stated that the move could further embolden what it described as state machinery-driven domination and persecution of the Kuki-Zo community. The organisation reiterated its firm stand that no Kuki-Zo MLA should associate with or lend legitimacy to the proposed government under any circumstances.

The organisation also appealed to elected Kuki-Zo representatives to respect the will and sentiments of their constituents by refraining from joining any such political formation. According to KIM, the present situation demands restraint and sensitivity rather than political maneuvering.

Highlighting the volatile conditions in the state, KIM warned that the formation of a popular government would neither restore normalcy nor heal the deep fractures caused by the ongoing conflict. Instead, it could further inflame tensions and push the state towards greater instability.

KIM further accused the BJP of ignoring ground realities and pursuing a politically and morally illegitimate arrangement. The organisation urged the Central Government to continue President's Rule in Manipur under appropriate constitutional provisions until a just, durable, and acceptable political solution is reached.

The apex body also cautioned that any Kuki-Zo MLA who chooses to join such a government must publicly explain their decision, especially in view of the earlier Guwahati Conclave resolution. It added that such MLAs would be held fully responsible for the consequences of their actions.
KIM warned that if a popular government is formed, it would be compelled to curtail all political activities of any political party in Kuki-Zo areas.
