Book: Manipur in Peril ~ Michael Lamjathang Thadou

 Preface

This book uncovers a hidden truth and provides a rigorously researched account of the rise of Kuki supremacist ideology, its violent campaigns, and the manipulation of identity politics that have led to the marginalisation and persecution of the Thadou community in Manipur. Drawing on historical, political, and ethnographic evidence, it exposes how the creation of the “Any Kuki Tribes” (AKT) category, coupled with the consolidation of Kuki militant and political networks, has destabilised Manipur’s plural society and threatened the survival of its indigenous peoples.

The narrative traces the deliberate construction of the “Kuki” identity from colonial times. It demonstrates how it has been weaponised to serve expansionist and political agendas in Manipur and neighbouring regions. It details the systematic suppression of the Thadou identity, the use of intimidation and violence by Kuki armed groups, and the complicity of political actors who enabled these processes through policies of appeasement and flawed frameworks, including the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.

Despite relentless persecution, the Thadou community has displayed extraordinary resilience. Through principled advocacy, peaceful dialogue, and alliances with other indigenous groups, they have upheld their identity and commitment to justice. The book highlights key moments of inter-community outreach and reconciliation, underscoring that the future of Manipur depends on unity, inclusion, and the protection of the rights of all original inhabitants.

This work calls for urgent reforms: the annulment of the AKT category, the abrogation of the SoO agreement, and accountability for those who have engineered division and violence. It warns against the dangers of identity-based politics and extremist narratives and urges all communities to recommit to constitutional values, historical truth, and peaceful coexistence.

The concluding message is unmistakable: only by confronting historical injustices, correcting mistakes, rejecting supremacist ideologies, and building a genuinely multi-ethnic, harmonious society can Manipur secure lasting peace and justice for all its people.
