United Kuki Council: Appeal & Public Annoucement

APPEAL & PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
The 18th May, 2026

To.
All Concerned Citizens, Community Leaders, Civil Society Organisations, and Members of the Khulmi/Khurmi Tribes of CHANDEL and TENGNOUPAL Districts

Subject: Appeal for Peaceful Coexistence, Mutual Understanding, and Preservation of Communal Harmony in Our Ancestral Homeland as Blood Brothers.

It is hereby brought to the attention of all concerned that the districts of Chandel District and Tengnoupal District have historically remained the ancestral homeland of the Songthu/ Chongthu bloodline, known among our people as the Khulmi/Khurmi community, recognised within the broader Kuki-Chin family of tribes.

From the colonial period onward, these historically connected bloodlines were administratively and artificially categorised into so-called “Old Kuki” and “New Kuki” groupings - classifications that fragmented what had long existed as a culturally and ancestrally unified people. Despite such externally imposed divisions, our shared ancestry, traditions, customary ties, and territorial bonds continue to unite us as one people with a common historical destiny.

Furthermore, despite organisational or administrative affiliations under bodies such as the Kuki Inpi (KI) or the Naga Peoples’ Organisation (NPO), the Khulmi/Khurmi tribes remain one people bound by shared ancestry, bloodline, customary ties, and historical kinship.

In this spirit, all sections of the Khulmi/Khurmi community are earnestly requested to maintain mutual respect, restraint, understanding, and brotherhood towards one another at all times, irrespective of political or organisational alignments.

The community is further appealed not to be swayed by external influences, political mobilisation, or prevailing tensions surrounding the present unnecessary conflict situation. Instead, let wisdom, dialogue, patience, and peaceful coexistence guide our collective conduct and decisions.

In view of the present circumstances and in the larger interest of peace, stability, and collective progress, all Khulmi/Khurmi tribes and communities residing across Chandel and Tengnoupal districts are earnestly appealed to:
i) Maintain complete normalcy in all spheres of public, social, and community life;

ii) Uphold peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among all communities and neighbouring peoples;

iii) Refrain from any act of violence, provocation, hostility, misinformation, or communal discord that may disturb the harmony of our land;

iv) Strengthen fraternity, understanding, and cooperation for the welfare and security of future generations;

v) Work collectively towards making our ancestral homeland safer, more peaceful, and more prosperous for all.

Let us remember that the enduring strength of our people lies not in divisions or imposed labels, but in unity, wisdom, and shared heritage. By choosing peace and reconciliation, we honour the sacrifices and legacy of our forefathers while securing dignity and stability for our children and generations yet to come.

Our ancestral homeland has endured through customary understanding, coexistence, and shared heritage across generations. It must not be allowed to descend into hostility, division, or communal discord among people of the same bloodline and historical roots.

Let peace prevail over provocation, kinship over division, and wisdom over conflict.
