Tamenglong, June 6, 2026: A World Environment Day programme was held at the Youth Hall of Tamenglong Baptist Church on Saturday, bringing together government officials, church leaders, youths, forest personnel and media representatives to promote environmental conservation and climate awareness.
The event was organised by The Tamenglong Times, The Gaanphiu Mail and the Tamenglong Forest Division in collaboration with the Youth Ministry of Tamenglong Baptist Church. Sponsored by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, the programme was held under the theme, “Inspire by Nature, For Climate. For Our Future.”
Kachamthai F. Gangmei, MCS, Chief Executive Officer of the Autonomous District Council, Tamenglong, attended the programme as chief guest. Joel Gangmei, Range Forest Officer, was the guest of honour, while Ringbam Kamei, Editor of The Gaanphiu Mail, presided over the function. Rev. Lungdapou Riamei, Pastor of Tamenglong Baptist Church, delivered the exhortation, and Rathailung Gangmei, Youth Director of the church, administered the World Environment Day pledge.
As part of the observance, a ceremonial sapling-planting programme was conducted, led by the chief guest in the presence of youths and community leaders.
Addressing the gathering, Kachamthai F. Gangmei said that humanity bears responsibility for the current condition of the planet and must take collective action to protect the environment. He highlighted the state government's “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, which aims to encourage school students to become environmentally responsible citizens.
Noting that Tamenglong possesses the largest forest cover in Manipur, Gangmei said that although jhum cultivation has long been a traditional livelihood for hill communities, growing environmental concerns require greater emphasis on horticulture, which offers better income opportunities. Stressing the need for continuous environmental stewardship, he remarked that “every day is Environment Day.”
Guest of honour Joel Gangmei called for the sustainable use of forest resources in a manner that balances ecological protection with economic benefits. He encouraged farmers to adopt cash crops and commended the people of Tamenglong for their responsible approach towards forest conservation.
The programme concluded with a renewed commitment from participants to promote conservation, sustainable livelihoods and climate action across the district.
