Assam Govt to Withdraw NEET Protest Cases, Free Detainees

Dispur, July 28, 2026: The Government of Assam has announced that it will withdraw all police cases registered in connection with protests over the alleged irregularities in the NEET (UG) examination and release those arrested in the cases.

According to a press release digitally signed by Ajay Tewari, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, Home & Political Department, and issued from Dispur on 27 July 2026, a total of five cases had been registered in Assam by 6:00 PM on 26 July 2026 in connection with the protests, leading to the arrest of 13 persons.

After reviewing the circumstances and considering the need to strengthen accountability and undertake systemic reforms in the examination and higher education ecosystem, the state government decided not to pursue legal action against those involved in the protests.

The government stated that no further adverse legal action will be initiated by any police authority in the state against the protesters. It also directed that the process of withdrawing all registered cases, regardless of the stage of legal proceedings, will begin promptly in accordance with the law.

In addition, authorities have been instructed to expedite the review of all arrests made in these cases and ensure the release of those detained. The government further clarified that no future proceedings will be initiated against the individuals involved and that the matter will be treated as closed.
