KHRC Condemns CM's Helicopter Visit to Kuki Areas

Lamka, 09 July 2026: The Kuki Human Rights Council (KHRC) has strongly criticised the visit of Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand to Churachandpur by helicopter, alleging that it was facilitated by the Central Government without the free, prior and informed consent of the Kuki people.

In a press release, KHRC claimed the visit was not a peace initiative but a political move that could deepen divisions within the Kuki community. It also alleged that the Chief Minister's entry into Kuki areas under armed protection violated the collective rights and aspirations of the Kuki people.

The council stated that local residents, including Kuki women, blocked the Chief Minister's road convoy at Kaprang, resulting in his arrival by helicopter. According to KHRC, the incident reflected a lack of public acceptance of the state government's presence in the area.

KHRC further called on the Government of India to engage in meaningful dialogue, respect the aspirations of the Kuki people, and avoid actions that could increase mistrust and instability. The organisation reiterated its demand for justice, security and recognition of Kuki political aspirations, while warning against any future attempts to enter Kuki areas without the consent of the local people.
