Lamka, July 3, 2026: Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of the Kuki tribes, has urged Chief Minister Nongthombam Khemchand to defer his reported visit to Kuki-Zo populated areas, particularly Lamka (Churachandpur), scheduled for July 4, citing prevailing security concerns and the fragile law-and-order situation.
In a press release issued by D. David, Joint Secretary (Information) of Kuki Inpi Manipur on Friday, KIM noted that while the Chief Minister has recently visited several hill districts without major incidents, the situation in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Tengnoupal remains fundamentally different due to unresolved tensions.
The organisation stated that the ground situation in these districts continues to be "highly sensitive and volatile," warning that any visit at this stage could trigger strong public reactions and potentially become a flashpoint, further destabilising the already fragile peace.
KIM said such a development would be "grave and counterproductive" to ongoing efforts aimed at restoring peace and normalcy in the state.
In view of the prevailing circumstances, the apex body strongly advised the Chief Minister to postpone any proposed visit to Kuki-Zo populated districts until conditions become demonstrably conducive for a safe, meaningful, and constructive engagement with the public.
The organisation further reiterated that any action perceived as disregarding the sentiments and aspirations of the Kuki-Zo people, particularly concerning their demand for a separate administration, would likely deepen existing mistrust and hinder prospects for lasting peace.
