Lamka Floods Cost Another Life Amid Rising Anguish

On 30 July 2026, heavy rain battered Lamka once again, turning streets and roads into rushing rivers. Tragically, the flooding has claimed another life. Thang Johnson, a young man from Vaal Veng and the son of the late Paukhanmung, was swept away by the swollen Lanva stream. A onlooker managed to capture the heartbreaking moment on camera as he was carried off by the current. Local residents immediately launched a search operation, but at the time of writing this report, he has still not been found.

This comes just weeks after a similar tragedy struck the town. On June 11, 13-year-old Lamboikim, a bright Class VIII student, fell into an open, flooded culvert in Laijon Veng and was swallowed by the muddy, raging waters. For two agonizing days, her family waited in anguish while local volunteers desperately searched the debris with their bare hands. Remarkably, the official rescue teams were nowhere to be seen. It was only on June 13, a full 48 hours after she disappeared, that the District Administration and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) finally turned up with their inflatable boats and equipment.

It is deeply frustrating that every time downpours hit Lamka, the town submerges and innocent lives are lost. The root cause is clear: proper drainage systems and roadside gutters are simply not being maintained.

The District Administration and local community leaders cannot afford to stay silent any longer. It is high time they step up, address these glaring infrastructure failures, and protect the people of Lamka before another family suffers.
