IMPHAL, August 20, 2026 — A student delegation representing ten schools and colleges met Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh today at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, submitting a demand for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) prior to the upcoming Census operations.
During the meeting, the student representatives urged the Chief Minister to pressurize the Central Government to order the execution of the NRC across Manipur. They emphasized that identifying illegal immigrants through an NRC process before conducting the census is crucial for the state. Additionally, the delegation requested the immediate reopening of educational institutions and called for a formal discussion on the matter during the forthcoming State Assembly Session.
In response, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh assured the delegation that the State Government supports the implementation of the NRC and will move to discuss the issue in the state assembly session scheduled to begin on September 2. He noted that while the government stands by the initiative, ensuring a proper, error-free implementation of the NRC remains a key priority that must be addressed.
The meeting was attended by Commissioner of Education Ningthoujam Geoffrey and Director of Education (S) Ng. Bhogendra Meitei. The student delegation comprised representatives from DM College of Science, Manipur College, CC Higher Secondary School, Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Nambol Higher Secondary School, T.G.
