Imphal, August 19, 2026: The Council of Teachers’ Associations (COTA), Manipur has expressed strong resentment over the circumstances under which training for census enumeration is being conducted, saying teachers assigned as enumerators and supervisors are facing embarrassment, humiliation and various obstacles while attending the training in compliance with government orders.
In a press release issued on August 19, COTA said the situation has caused concern among teachers who have been assigned census-related duties.
COTA appealed to the state government and the agitating civil society organisations (CSOs), which are demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the census enumeration, to work towards an amicable solution at the earliest.
The teachers’ body said a conducive atmosphere was necessary for the census process and appealed to the state government to relieve teachers from the duties assigned to them as enumerators and supervisors.
COTA is the apex body of the All Manipur Elementary School Teachers’ Association (AMESTA), All Manipur Secondary School Teachers’ Welfare Association (AMSSTA), All Manipur Graduate Teachers’ Welfare Association (AMGTA), All Manipur Promotee Government Higher Secondary Lecturers’ Welfare Association (AMPGHSLWA) and All Manipur Government Higher Secondary Lecturers’ Welfare Association (AMGHSLWA).
The statement was issued in the public interest by COTA Co-Convenors L. Jugindro Singh, S. Joyshanker Singh and Sheikh Sirajuddin Shah.
