Liangmai Naga Council strongly condemns Tokpa Naga arson act

Imphal, August 12, 2026: The Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur, has strongly condemned the alleged arson attack on Tokpa Naga village in Champhai, Kangpokpi district, on the night of August 11, 2026.

In a press release dated August 12 by the Media Cell of the Liangmai Naga Council Manipur (LNC-M), the council said the alleged attack took place at around 9:30 pm, when multiple armed persons allegedly entered the village and set ablaze approximately 10 houses and a church.

Describing the alleged targeting of civilians, residential properties and a place of worship as a “grave and reprehensible act of violence”, the council said such destruction posed a serious threat to the lives, security and dignity of the civilian population.

The council also expressed concern over reports that security personnel were stationed only a few metres from the affected area, despite the locality being considered a highly sensitive red-zone area. It said the alleged failure to prevent, deter or intervene in the attack raised serious questions regarding operational preparedness, negligence and accountability.

The Liangmai Naga Council demanded the immediate apprehension and prosecution of those responsible, along with a swift, impartial, transparent and time-bound investigation into the incident.

It further called for an inquiry into the conduct and possible dereliction of duty by security personnel present in the vicinity, immediate strengthening of security in the affected area, and adequate relief, rehabilitation and compensation for families whose homes and properties were destroyed.

The council urged the government and security authorities to act with urgency, impartiality and constitutional responsibility, stressing that the destruction of civilian homes and a place of worship should not be met with silence or administrative inaction.

It also warned against continued attacks on smaller tribal communities and called for accountability, saying that the safety, dignity and fundamental rights of innocent civilians must be upheld.
