Manipur Orders Closure of All Schools and Colleges Due to Unrest

IMPHAL — The Government of Manipur has ordered a state-wide shutdown of all educational institutions from Thursday, August 20, 2026, to Saturday, August 22, 2026, citing the prevailing law and order situation in the state.

The order was issued on August 19, 2026, by Ningthoujam Geoffrey, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (School Education, Higher & Technical Education, Adult Education, SCERT), by order and in the name of the Governor of Manipur.

The official directive mandates the temporary closure of:

  • Schools: All schools affiliated with the Board of Secondary Education, the Council of Higher Secondary Education, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), or other boards.

  • Higher Education: Colleges, higher education institutes, and universities across Manipur.

  • Sectors Covered: Institutions across government, government-aided, and unaided/private sectors.

The Secretariat has instructed relevant department heads, including the Directors of School Education, University & Higher Education, SCERT, and Social Welfare, to circulate the order immediately to all concerned offices and institutions. Copies have also been forwarded to the Secretary to the Governor at Lok Bhawan, the Secretary to the Chief Minister, the Staff Officer to the Chief Secretary, District Deputy Commissioners, Zone Education Officers (ZEOs), and Registrars of state universities (including MU, DMU, MTU, and MUC)
