MSCW Organises One Day Legal Awareness Programme

Imphal, August 11, 2026 (DIPR): A one-day legal awareness programme was jointly organised by the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) and the Women Department of Manipur Baptist Convention (MBC) today at MBC Training Hall, Imphal, with the objective of enhancing awareness among women about their legal rights.

Delivering the keynote address, Smt W. Phajatombi Devi, MCS, Member Secretary, MSCW and Additional Director, IPR, Manipur, stated that the programme was organised as part of a two-day seminar programme being organised by MBC, and emphasized the importance of empowering women through legal awareness.

She observed that the active participation of the audience gives meaning and purpose to such programmes and said that greater awareness of legal rights is essential for empowering women in today’s society.  

She highlighted the need for women to be aware of the legal provisions and remedies available to them and said that the resource person would explain various aspects of women's rights and how legal remedies can be effectively accessed and utilised.

Smt Phajatombi further noted that the women secretaries participating in the programme could share the knowledge gained during the session with other women in their respective associations and communities, thereby helping to spread legal awareness at the grassroots level. 

She appealed to all participants to listen attentively to the technical session and make the best use of the programme to enhance their understanding of women's legal rights.

Speaking on the occasion, Th. Tiningpham Monsang, Chairperson, MSCW, stated that the Commission, established in 2006, has dealt with numerous cases in which women lacked adequate awareness of their rights and available legal remedies. She said that the Commission serves as a platform where women can bring forward their complaints and seek appropriate assistance. 

She added that the Commission has been regularly organising legal awareness programmes to educate and empower women and enable them to effectively seek remedies when their rights are violated.

She further pointed out the potential of women to influence positive social change and urged the participants to actively engage with the technical session and disseminate the knowledge gained among women in their respective communities.

The inaugural session and blessing prayer was led by Rev. Dr. Jolly Rimai, General Secretary, MBC.

The programme featured a technical session on "Empowering Women Through Legal Literacy (Rights of Women)", conducted by Kh. Lucy Jacky, Deputy Chief, Legal Aid Defence Counsel, Chandel. The welcome address was delivered by Ms. Archana Serto, Women Secretary, MBC.  

The programme was attended by Sk. Sophia, Member, MSCW, along with women secretaries representing various church associations.
