Munirka Delhi: Mini Northeast Hub of Culture and Commerce

MUNIRKA is a well-known locality in South Delhi. To its north lie Munirka Village and Hauz Khas, to the east are Vasant Vihar and IIT Delhi, to the south is Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and to the west are RK Puram and Vasant Kunj. Important institutions nearby include IIT Delhi, JNU, Vasant Vihar offices, embassies, and several government departments. Munirka is also well connected by public transport and has its own Metro station, making travel easy for students, workers, and shoppers across Delhi NCR.

Munirka began as a traditional village settlement and started expanding with Delhi’s urban growth in the 1960s and 1970s. Over time, it developed into a mixed residential and commercial area. Today, Munirka is widely recognised as one of the most important places for people from Northeast India. Many now describe it as a mini Northeast capital within Delhi.

Thousands of Northeasterners settled here for education, employment, and a sense of safety. Gradually, they opened small businesses. Today, Munirka is filled with vegetable shops, grocery stores, restaurants, beauty salons, garment shops, and start-ups run by people from Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya, and other states. Many shops sell fresh and traditional items brought directly from home states, such as bamboo shoots, dried fish, fermented or stinky beans, pumpkins, soya beans, local greens, chillies, and wild fruits. If you are looking for Northeast vegetables and foods, do not hesitate to come to Munirka. It will go beyond your expectations.

The photos clearly show this lively trade. Baskets are full of dried fish, fermented foods, fresh greens, beans, pumpkins, and indigenous fruits. Hanging vegetables and neatly arranged produce reflect deep cultural roots and tireless effort. These sights often amaze visitors who are new to Northeast food culture.

Munirka has become a commercial hub, but challenges remain. House and shop rents have increased sharply, and electricity bills are often unregulated, charged at the landlords’ will. This writer once rented a 1BHK for Rs 4,000, which has now risen to Rs 12,000, along with rising electricity charges. Many Northeastern tenants worry about these unchecked increases.

The Covid-19 outbreak badly affected Northeastern shops, and many lives were lost. After the pandemic, slow recovery followed. The violence in Manipur further pushed many people to open grocery shops, restaurants, garment stores, cosmetic shops, and beauty salons to survive.

Despite difficulties, understanding between locals and Northeasterners has improved over the years. There is growing acceptance, cooperation, and mutual respect in daily life. Many hope this relationship will grow even stronger in the future.

Today, people say, If you are lost anywhere in Delhi NCR, go to Munirka—you will see your own face. Some from Lamka lovingly call it “Sweet Lamka,” as home food, culture, and clothing styles are easily found here.

A brief survey by this writer shows that Northeastern shopkeepers are hardworking, earning only modest incomes, yet supporting families back home. Munirka, despite its struggles, remains a lifeline and a cultural home away from home.

Faster Procedures, Fragile Foundations

THE recent notification (dated:18.12.2025) authorizing Churachandpur District Hospital to carry out post-mortem examinations is a welcome administrative step. By declaring the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at Churachandpur Medical College as a Medico-Legal Centre, the government has reduced delays that families have long suffered. Until now, bodies often had to wait for forensic experts to arrive from outside the district, causing emotional distress and procedural delays. Allowing local post-mortems means faster justice, quicker release of bodies to families, and smoother handling of medico-legal cases. For a district with only one government hospital, this decision acknowledges a ground reality that cannot be ignored.

However, this move also exposes deeper weaknesses in the government’s health and forensic infrastructure. The authorization appears to prioritize administrative convenience over professional capacity. A key question arises: why are forensic experts seemingly treated as non-essential? The answer lies not in their irrelevance, but in the government’s inability to deploy and retain qualified forensic specialists in hill districts like Churachandpur. Post-mortems are not routine medical procedures; they require specialized training to ensure accuracy, credibility, and legal robustness. Without sufficient forensic experts, there is a risk of compromised investigations, weak evidence in courts, and loss of public trust in medico-legal outcomes.

Moreover, placing such a heavy responsibility on the only government hospital in the district raises concerns about workload and quality. Churachandpur District Hospital already struggles with limited staff and resources while serving a large population. Adding full medico-legal responsibilities without parallel investment in infrastructure, training, and expert recruitment may overburden the system. While the notification is a positive beginning, it should not become a substitute for long-term solutions. The government must urgently appoint qualified forensic experts, upgrade facilities, and ensure that justice is served not just quickly, but correctly. Administrative shortcuts cannot replace professional competence.

Christmas Message to the Kuki-Zo People

Date: 23rd December 2025

On this blessed occasion of Christmas, on behalf of the Kuki-Zo Council, I extend my warm greetings and heartfelt wishes to all Kuki-Zo brothers and sisters, wherever you may be.

For the past two years, our people have been denied the joy and peace of celebrating Christmas in its true spirit due to the prolonged ethnic conflict and the immense suffering it has caused. Homes were destroyed, families displaced, lives lost, and our collective spirit was tested in ways never imagined. Those were times of pain, sacrifice, and resilience.

This year, as the atmosphere is relatively more conducive, I encourage our people to spend this Christmas with your loved ones and families—sharing love, warmth, and compassion, which are the very essence of Christmas. Let this season remind us of hope, healing, and the strength we draw from togetherness.

However, even as we celebrate, we must not forget the reality we continue to face. We are still at war. Justice has not yet been delivered to the Kuki-Zo people. No agreement, settlement, or understanding has been reached to address our rightful political aspirations and the injustices inflicted upon us. The struggle is far from over.

Therefore, I urge every Kuki-Zo individual to remain vigilant, steadfast, and united. Our unity is our greatest strength. We must continue to stand firm and pursue our political demands with determination, discipline, and unwavering resolve until justice is secured and our rights are fully realised.

May this Christmas renew our courage, strengthen our unity, and guide us forward in our collective journey.

Merry Christmas to all the Kuki-Zo people.
May God bless our land and our people.

KHALLAI Football Club has officially announced its return to competitive football. The club, which proudly represents the Thangkhal community, is ready to step back onto the field.

Khallai FC confirmed that it will participate in the 78th Zomi Namni Football Tournament 2026. The club stated that the time has come for everyone to work together in unity.

The name Khallai comes from two words: “Khal”, meaning Thangkhal, and “Lai”, meaning “we are still Thangkhal”. The club was formed by a group of young football lovers with a strong passion for the game.

The motto of Khallai FC is “Lungkhat”, which means “One Mind, One Body, One Spirit.” This motto reflects the club’s belief in unity, discipline, and teamwork.

The club launched its official jersey in November 2018, inspired by the jersey numbers used by the Argentina national team during the World Cup. Earlier, in 2017, Khallai FC also competed in the District Level Second Division, organised by the Churachandpur District SportsAssociation (CDSA).

Khalvontawi News (Voice of the Voiceless) wishes Khallai FC the very best spirit for the tournament, believing that sportsmanship is the true key to success.

Manipur Govt Establishes Medico-Legal Centre at CMC

Imphal, Dec 18, 2025: The Government of Manipur has declared the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology at Churachandpur Medical College (CMC) as a Medico-Legal Centre to handle all medico-legal cases in the state.

The notification, issued by the Home Department, states that the Medico-Legal Centre will have jurisdiction over Churachandpur and Pherzawl districts, including adjoining areas. The centre will become functional with immediate effect, following approval from the Competent Authority.

The order is signed by H. Balkrisna Singh, Additional Secretary (Home), Government of Manipur.

The establishment of the Medico-Legal Centre is expected to streamline forensic investigations and improve handling of medico-legal cases in the region, providing a dedicated facility for post-mortem examinations, evidence collection, and expert testimony in legal proceedings. Authorities believe this will enhance justice delivery and public health services in the affected districts.

Officials from various departments, including the Director General of Police and Health Commissioner, have been informed to ensure smooth implementation and coordination with the new centre.

Christmas Welcomed, but Persecution of Christians Ignored

On 20 December 2025, the Vice-President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan, hosted a Christmas luncheon at the Vice-President’s Enclave, extending warm greetings of Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Cardinals, archbishops, bishops, priests, pastors, Reverend Fathers and Sisters from across India attended the gathering. The event projected a message of harmony, goodwill and national unity. Such gestures from high constitutional offices are welcome, especially during Christmas, a season that speaks of peace, love and hope for all people, regardless of faith.

However, this celebration at the highest level stands in sharp contrast to the harsh reality faced by many Christians across the country. In several states, Christians continue to face killings, assaults and social boycott. Churches have been burnt, pastors and evangelists arrested, and prayer meetings disrupted. In Manipur alone, more than 300 churches have reportedly been demolished during the ongoing conflict. These are not isolated incidents but part of a wider pattern of fear and insecurity. A serious question arises: were these painful realities honestly raised and discussed during the Vice-President’s meeting with church leaders?

The persecution of Christians in India demands urgent reflection. Christians are targeted not because they break the law, but because of growing intolerance, misuse of religion for political gain, and the spread of false narratives about conversion. The Constitution of India guarantees freedom of religion, yet this promise often fails on the ground. If Christmas gatherings at the top are to have real meaning, they must go beyond greetings and symbolism. They should become platforms to speak truth to power, demand justice for victims, and ensure protection for all minorities. Only then can Christmas truly represent peace, not just in words, but in the lived reality of India’s Christians.

Manipur Unrest: Peaceful Dharna on Buffer Zone Breaches in T. Munjang

A peaceful dharna protesting the alleged breaching of buffer zones and the planting of explosives was organised by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) on Monday, 22 December 2025, at T. Munjang in Lamka, southern Manipur. The protest follows recent incidents in which some Meiteis reportedly entered Torbung in violation of the designated buffer zones, an act described by organisers as provocative and a threat to peace in the region.

Bangladesh Army Arrests Kuki-Chin Villager in Bandarban Raid

An innocent villager was reportedly arrested by the Bangladesh Army during a sudden raid in Roinpara village of Bandarban district, triggering fear and tension among local residents.

According to the Media Wing of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) Bangladesh, the man has been identified as Sanglianthang (30), son of Juamangir, a farmer by occupation. He was taken into custody on suspicion of being a member of the Kuki National Army (KNA). However, villagers have strongly denied the allegation, insisting that Sanglianthang has no links to any armed or political organisation.

Local sources claimed that army personnel from the Roinpara camp entered the village without prior notice, broke into his house, and arrested him, allegedly labelling him a terrorist. Residents described the arrest as an abduction and maintained that he is an innocent civilian.

Following the operation, panic reportedly continues to prevail in the village. The incident has been described by community members as part of ongoing persecution against the Bawm Christian community in the region.

The Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) has strongly condemned what it termed as inhumane behaviour by state security forces and demanded an end to such actions against civilians.

Village Volunteers Eastern Zone Raises Concern Over Kuki MLA Meetings with Meitei MLAs

Dec 20, 2025: The Village Volunteers, Eastern Zone (VVEZ), Kuki-Gam, has expressed grave concern over reports that certain Kuki MLAs were seen meeting jointly with Meitei MLAs in New Delhi.

In a press statement (Ref No. VVEZ-PR/037/12-25), VVEZ reiterated that Kuki MLAs should not participate in the formation of the so‑called "popular government" in Manipur, stressing that the Kuki and Meitei communities are physically and geographically separated, a reality that must be acknowledged.

VVEZ has urged the Government of India to formally recognize this separation and grant a separate administrative arrangement in the form of a Union Territory for the Kuki people.

The organization also emphasized that resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) without a comprehensive political solution to the ongoing ethnic conflict will only exacerbate tensions and may lead to further escalation between the affected communities.

The statement was issued by the Information & Publicity wing of the Village Volunteers, Eastern Zone (VVEZ).
