KHRC Responds to Arambai Tenggol Chief Korou Nganba on NRC

PRESS RELEASE

KHRC Responds to Arambai Tenggol Chief Korou Nganba on NRC, Illegal Immigrants, and Peace

We, the Kuki Human Rights Council, strongly reject any claims or attempts by the Meitei community to exert authority over the Kuki community and its territory. The Meitei and Kuki communities have been separated since May 3, 2023, and the chapter of coexistence between Kuki and Meitei community has closed.

Regarding the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and illegal immigrants, we state that if the Meitei community wants NRC, they can pursue it in their own territory; we will not oppose. But for the Kuki territory, the decision on NRC will be made by the people, and it's none of your business. The Kuki demand for state or union territory is not only to protect the people, land, and rights but also to prevent illegal immigrants, foreigners, and refugees from outside.

The Kuki-Meitei conflict is not related to NRC, illegal immigrants and poppy cultivation, it's about land, identity and rights. The land and people are totally separated, this is witnessed by the centre and the world. We, the Kuki community, desire peace between Kuki and Meitei community, but not coexistence. We emphasize that without separate administration, there can be no peace. This is the only path forward.
