Loibol Village Attack Leaves Three Dead, Sparks Protests

Three Kuki civilians, including a seven-month pregnant woman, were killed in an alleged armed attack on Loibol Khullen, a Kuki village under Bungte Chiru Sub-Division in Manipur's Kangpokpi district, early Thursday morning, 5 June 2026.

According to local sources, the incident occurred at around 4 a.m. on June 5 when armed militants allegedly raided the village and set several houses on fire. The attackers were alleged to be members of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) and the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF-Kamson). Some local organisations also alleged the involvement of Meitei militants

The deceased have been identified as Letkhongam Haokip, his wife Mrs. Tinmary Haokip (30), and Mr. Jangminlal Haokip. Residents said Mrs. Tinmary Haokip was seven months pregnant at the time of her death, making the incident particularly tragic for the local community.

The attack comes amid rising tensions between Kuki and Naga communities following the killing of three Kuki pastors in Kangpokpi district on May 13. In the aftermath of that incident, reports emerged of civilians from both communities being detained, further escalating mistrust and insecurity in the region.

Meanwhile, widespread protests were held across Kuki-inhabited areas condemning the killings in Loibol Khullen. On June 6, hundreds of Kuki-Zo people participated in coffin rallies and mourning processions, demanding justice for the victims and stronger security measures to protect vulnerable villages.
