Manipur Police: Why 'Armed Militants' in One Case and 'Unknown Miscreants' in Another?

Questions have been raised over the differing descriptions used by Manipur Police
in two recent attacks in the state.

On 29 May 2026, an attack took place at Roudei village in TM Kasom, a Naga village, during which an FCI truck driver, Nitish Kumar (57) from West Bengal, was killed. In an official press statement, Manipur Police identified the assailants as "armed Kuki militants."

However, on 30 May 2026, Kharam Vaiphei, a Kuki village in Kangpokpi district, came under attack, with several houses reportedly set ablaze. In its press statement regarding the incident, Manipur Police described the perpetrators only as "unknown miscreants."

The contrasting terminology has prompted questions from members of the public. Observers are asking why the police were able to specifically identify the attackers in the Roudei incident, while the perpetrators of the attack on Kharam Vaiphei remain officially unidentified.

The differing characterisation of the two incidents has fuelled debate over consistency, transparency, and the standards used in identifying suspects in conflict-related violence in Manipur.
