Kuki Inpi urges MLAs to boycott Manipur Assembly session

IMPHAL, August 31, 2026: The Kuki Inpi Manipur has directed all Kuki-Zo Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to refrain from attending the eighth session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, scheduled to begin in Imphal on September 2, 2026.

In a press release issued on August 31, the apex body of the Kuki tribes said the decision would remain in force until a political settlement of the Kuki-Zo people’s demand for separate administration is reached.

The organisation said the participation of Kuki-Zo MLAs in the Assembly, at a time when the community’s fundamental political future remains unresolved, would be inconsistent with the collective political position and aspirations of the Kuki-Zo people.

The Kuki Inpi said the community had clearly expressed its demand for a separate political administration and that the issue could not be set aside while normal legislative proceedings resumed. It said there could be no return to “business as usual” without a political solution.

The organisation called upon all Kuki-Zo MLAs to demonstrate political responsibility, solidarity and fidelity to the mandate of the people they represent by strictly following the directive.

It warned that any Kuki-Zo MLA who disregarded the collective decision would be viewed as acting against the Kuki-Zo people’s political position and as siding against the community’s legitimate political aspirations.

The Kuki Inpi said the present circumstances demanded unity, discipline and a clear political stand rather than participation in an Assembly whose legitimacy, in the context of the Kuki-Zo people, remains fundamentally contested.

It reiterated that the Kuki-Zo people would not accept any attempt to use their participation in the Manipur Legislative Assembly to project normalcy or dilute their demand for a political settlement.
