TNL Alleges Civilian Frisking by Assam Rifles in Ukhrul

Ukhrul, August 6, 2026: The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has alleged that personnel of the Assam Rifles have been conducting unnecessary frisking of civilians and random checks in different parts of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts over the past few days, causing inconvenience to commuters and local residents.

In a press communiqué issued on Thursday, the TNL claimed that personnel of the 11 Assam Rifles carried out frisking of civilian vehicles at Maku village junction on August 6, leading to delays for travellers along the Imphal–Ukhrul–Kamjong route. It further alleged that troops of the 40 Assam Rifles were deployed at Changa Junction, Nungshong Junction and Finch Corner on August 5, while referring to a day-long frisking operation at Ningchou village under Kamjong Sub-Division on August 3.

The organisation expressed concern over what it described as increasing militarisation of civilian areas, alleging that the security measures had created fear and insecurity among residents, particularly women and children. It questioned the need for such operations in areas it described as relatively peaceful and claimed that the deployment had caused distress to the local population.

The TNL urged the concerned authorities to examine the matter and take corrective measures at the earliest. It also condemned what it termed unnecessary frisking operations and called on the Assam Rifles to refrain from conducting similar activities in civilian areas in the future.

The communiqué further contained allegations regarding the prevailing security situation in the hill districts and criticised the role of the Assam Rifles, while also making references to the ongoing conflict and the Indo-Naga ceasefire. These claims have been made by the TNL, and no response from the Assam Rifles or the authorities was immediately available at the time of publication.
