Transforming Churachandpur College Through Dedication

FOUNDED in 1964 with the guiding motto “Clarior E Tenebris” (From Darkness to Light), Churachandpur College (Autonomous) has long stood as a vital cornerstone of higher education in the region. Over the decades, the institution has steadily evolved from its early days under Guwahati University to becoming a government institution in 1977, joining Manipur University in 1981, and eventually securing autonomous status under UGC regulations in early 2024. Today, the campus is vibrant with academic energy, catering to 5,217 students alongside 81 teaching and 25 non-teaching staff across 12 Arts and 8 Science honours disciplines. Yet, true structural and welfare progress often hinges on dedicated leadership. On 18th May 2026, Ginzamang T. Zomi stepped in as the 17th Principal in-charge, bringing decades of academic expertise, research, and administrative service to the forefront. His proactive approach quickly bore fruit on 27th July 2026, when Rev. K. Kamchinkhup, General Secretary of the EBC, inaugurated and prayed for a new Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification plant and 340-foot borewell on campus. Highlighted by Assistant Professor Bijumon and formally appreciated by the Students’ Union, this vital facility finally provides clean, safe drinking water to thousands of students, faculty, and staff members alike.

This recent welfare landmark is a natural extension of Ginzamang T. Zomi’s long-standing devotion to the institution and its community. Having joined the college in June 2007 as a lecturer in Sociology, his journey is marked by significant scholarly and developmental milestones. Beyond authoring foundational sociology textbooks, publishing research on local public health and demographic trends, and guiding numerous IGNOU student projects, he played instrumental roles in establishing the Sociology Department, securing the NAAC B+ accreditation, and achieving autonomous status for the college. His administrative contributions span across vital responsibilities viz. serving as Head of the Sociology Department, Academic Counselor, and active member of the Development and Code of Conduct committees. Looking forward, the foundation he has helped strengthen opens up clear avenues for future growth. To meet modern developmental demands, the institution could greatly benefit from expanding into a Commerce stream at the undergraduate level, introducing postgraduate (MA/MSc) degree programs, and incorporating a dedicated Teachers Training Department offering B.Ed, B.El.Ed, and Nursery training. Besides, introducing structured vocational and skill-development courses ranging from computer programming languages like C, C++, CSS, JavaScript, and Python to web development, computer hardware, mobile repair, electrician training, mechanic work, tailoring, fashion design, beautician courses, and stenography, would equip graduates with practical skills for an evolving job market.

The steady advancement of Churachandpur College reflects what can be accomplished when academic vision meets genuine commitment to student welfare. From addressing fundamental campus necessities like pure drinking water to laying the groundwork for broader institutional growth, Ginzamang T. Zomi’s energetic leadership stands as a highly commendable model of public service in higher education. By balancing his deep background as a researcher, educator, and administrator with a hands-on approach to daily campus challenges, his ongoing efforts ensure that the college continues to live up to its founding promise of bringing light, knowledge, and meaningful opportunity to generations of young learners.
