ZoRO Observes World Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Aizawl

THE Re-unification Organisation (ZoRO) observed the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2026 at Vanapa Hall in Aizawl, bringing together community leaders, representatives and members of the Zo people to highlight their shared identity, heritage, rights and aspirations.

ZoRO has been working towards the re-unification of the Zo ethnic people, including the Chin, Kuki, Mizo and Zomi communities, who share close historical, cultural and linguistic connections. The organisation maintains that the Zo people have historically inhabited a contiguous region that was subsequently divided by the international boundaries of India, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

According to ZoRO, these boundaries were drawn during the colonial and post-colonial periods without the collective consent of the Zo people, resulting in the separation of communities across three countries. Despite the political boundaries, ZoRO says that the people continue to maintain strong bonds through their common ancestry, traditional institutions, customs, languages, cultural practices and social relationships.

The observance in Aizawl also served as a platform to reflect on the challenges faced by indigenous communities, including protection of traditional lands and resources, preservation of indigenous languages and cultures, political representation, socio-economic development and the safeguarding of indigenous identity in an increasingly changing world.

ZoRO has consistently advocated for greater cooperation and closer ties among Zo communities living across India, Myanmar and Bangladesh. Its broader vision is centred on peaceful and democratic efforts towards Zo unity and the preservation of the community’s collective heritage, while recognising the existing political and international realities of the three countries.

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, observed annually on 9 August, provides an opportunity to recognise the contributions, rights and distinct identities of indigenous peoples worldwide. For the Zo community, the occasion also carries significance as a reminder of their shared history and the importance of preserving their cultural bonds despite the political boundaries that separate them.
