A fierce ethnic conflict between the Kuki-Zomi and Meitei communities erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023. The violence resulted in numerous deaths and widespread destruction, including the burning of homes, villages, churches, vehicles, and other properties.
The conflict was triggered amid widespread opposition from tribal communities in Manipur to a High Court order (dated: 27 March 2023) related to the recommendation for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. Many tribal groups feared that granting ST status to the Meiteis could affect their constitutional safeguards, land rights, and political protections.
The image shown here became one of the most widely circulated visuals during the conflict. It reflects the aspirations of some sections of the Zo people: Chin, Kuki, Mizo, and Zomi communities, who expressed support for the idea of a "Greater Mizoram".
