FIFA World Cup 2026 | RO-16: Norway 2 - 1 Brazil

Norway produced one of the greatest upsets in FIFA World Cup history by defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16, booking their place in the quarter-finals for the first time ever at New York New Jersey Stadium on 06 July 2026. For much of the first half, Erling Haaland had very few touches and was well marked by Brazil's defence. However, the Norwegian striker remained patient and composed. His breakthrough came in the 79th minute when he rose above the defenders to head home a brilliant cross from Andreas Schjelderup. Just 11 minutes later, Schjelderup again found Haaland, who calmly drilled a low shot into the corner to complete his match-winning brace. Norway's disciplined defending and outstanding goalkeeping frustrated Brazil throughout the contest.

Brazil introduced Neymar after half-time in an effort to change the game. The veteran forward converted a penalty in the 90+10th minute and immediately walked towards Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, appearing to exchange words with him. Tempers also flared in the closing moments, with Neymar involved in another heated incident before the final whistle. As the match ended, the Brazilian star was left in tears, bringing what is expected to be his final FIFA World Cup to an emotional close with a yellow card. Norway finished the match without a single booking, while joyous Norwegian supporters celebrated a historic victory. Across the stadium, many Brazilian fans were left in tears as their nation's earliest World Cup exit since 1990 became reality.

Norway's famous victory marks the country's first-ever appearance in a FIFA World Cup quarter-final, while Brazil's dream of a sixth world title comes to a painful end.
