FIFA World Cup 2026 | RO-32: Mexico 2 - 0 Ecuador

MEXICO secured a deserved place in the Round of 16 with a convincing 2-0 victory over ECUADOR at Mexico City Stadium on 30 June 2026. Playing in front of a passionate home crowd, El Tri controlled much of the contest and broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Santiago Giménez calmly finished after a clever through ball from Orbelín Pineda. Ecuador responded positively after the break and enjoyed spells of possession, but Mexico doubled their lead in the 72nd minute as Hirving Lozano finished a swift counter-attack following an assist from Edson Álvarez. The two-goal advantage proved enough to seal a comfortable victory for the hosts.

MEXICO looked sharp throughout the match, creating the better opportunities with quick passing and disciplined movement. Ecuador fought hard and threatened on several occasions, but Mexican goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagón produced important saves whenever he was called into action. Mexico's defence remained well organised, while Giménez and Lozano constantly troubled the Ecuadorian back line with their pace and finishing.

ECUADOR bow out after a spirited campaign, while Mexico advance to the Round of 16, where they will face the winners of England vs DR Congo. The hosts combined experience and attacking quality to deliver another impressive performance, keeping alive their hopes of a deep run in the tournament.

Ecuador defender Piero Hincapié became the second player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to receive a red card under FIFA's new rule banning players from covering their mouths during confrontational exchanges with opponents.

Hincapié was sent off in the 95th minute of Ecuador's 2-0 Round of 32 defeat to Mexico on Tuesday after an altercation with Mexican striker Santiago Giménez. Match officials issued the red card after determining that Hincapié had covered his mouth while speaking during the confrontation.

FIFA introduced the rule to stop players from hiding abusive or offensive remarks by covering their mouths during on-field disputes.

The first player to be dismissed under the new regulation was Paraguay captain Miguel Almirón, who received a red card during his side's group-stage match against Turkey last week. The decision came after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed the incident and advised the referee to send him off.
