St Joseph’s School Opens Annual Games and Sports Meet

SINGNGAT, August 25, 2026: St Joseph’s High School, Singngat, opened its Annual Games and Sports Day on Monday, with retired IAS officer Dr Philip Mangkang Zou as the chief guest.

The programme began with an opening prayer led by Rev. Fr Mark Aimeng, followed by a welcome address from the school principal, Rev. Fr Mung.

In his address, the principal highlighted Dr Philip’s achievements, describing him as the first member of the Zou community to clear the Union Public Service Commission examination and enter the Indian Administrative Service. He also noted that Dr Philip was the first Zou to earn a BE in Civil Engineering, an MA in Linguistics and a PhD in the Zo/Zou language.

Dr Philip founded the Zo Cultural cum Literature Society of India (ZOCULSIN) in New Delhi in 1998 to promote Zo, Zou and other tribal languages. He has authored books in Zou, English and Hindi and has also been involved in social service and youth development.

His contribution to sports was also highlighted, particularly his establishment of Zogene Football Club to nurture young football talent. The principal also noted Dr Philip’s support for internally displaced people affected by the ongoing conflict in Manipur.

Dr Philip formally inaugurated the sports meet by hoisting the flag and inspecting the march-past contingents.

Addressing the students, he spoke about the importance of education, discipline, faith and perseverance. Referring to his roots in Singtom village, he said he was proud to come from the area and stressed that students’ educational opportunities were made possible by the sacrifices of their parents.

He urged students to respect and obey their parents, maintain a close relationship with God and avoid harmful habits. He also encouraged them to plan their lives carefully, work towards securing a stable source of income and never lose hope in their endeavours.

Quoting the biblical message, “Nothing is impossible with God,” Dr Philip encouraged the students to remain determined in pursuing their goals.

He presented a token of appreciation to the students before the programme concluded with a vote of thanks by the headmistress.

The sporting competitions then began among the school’s four groups — Red, Blue, Green and Yellow — with students taking part in a spirited atmosphere marked by enthusiasm and healthy competition.
