State Must Act Swiftly to Arrest Killers

THE horrific violence that unfolded in Teikhang village along the IT Road corridor on Monday, 31 August 2026, represents a disastrous and unforgivable breakdown of law and order across the region. Around fifty heavily armed cadres, alleged to belong to the NSCN (IM) and its proxy group ZUF (K), launched an unprovoked and brutal attack on the peaceful settlement. They opened fire indiscriminately on terrified residents and set several family homes ablaze, leaving three innocent villagers dead and four others critically wounded. Among the deceased were two unarmed women: Mrs Tingneichin Lhouvum (40) wife of Tongpao Lhouvum, Mrs Hoineineng Lhoujem (21) wife of Thanggoulen Lhoujem, alongside Mr Lamtinthang Lhoujem (36) son of Seilun Lhoujem, while four elderly villagers: Mrs Nemneichong Lhoujem (50), Mr Seilun Lhoujem (70), Ms Deilhing Haokip (55) and Mr Kamtinsei Chongloi (38) were left fighting for their lives with severe bullet injuries. As highlighted by the Kuki-Zo Women’s Forum and the Twilang Area Kuki CSO Coordinating Committee, these victims were not caught in an accidental crossfire; they were deliberately hunted down, targeted, and shot. Such a mindless, bloodthirsty assault on defenceless citizens is a barbaric act of extreme cowardice that violates every basic standard of human decency, morality, and Christian values of peace and compassion.

No political demand, ethnic grievance, territorial ambition, or organizational interest can ever validate or excuse the cold-blooded murder of civilians and the terrorisation of vulnerable communities. As the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust rightly pointed out, allowing anti-national armed groups to operate with apparent impunity while targeting innocent citizens undermines the rule of law and completely shatters any genuine hope for regional stability. The local populations have shown remarkable patience, dignity, and restraint despite continuous acts of severe provocation, but this peaceful patience must never be misconstrued by authorities or aggressors as fear, weakness, or surrender. It is deeply troubling that heavily armed groups can freely storm peaceful villages, destroy family homes, and extinguish human lives without facing immediate military resistance or swift legal consequences. The state cannot afford to stand by as a silent spectator while innocent citizens are slaughtered in their own ancestral homes.

The state government and central authorities bear an absolute constitutional responsibility to safeguard every citizen’s right to life, regardless of their ethnic identity or geographic location. We unequivocally condemn this senseless killing in the strongest possible terms and press the state government to urgently deploy adequate security forces, ensure immediate safe medical passage for the critically injured, and launch an independent, time-bound investigation. The perpetrators responsible for this heinous crime must be hunted down without delay, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law without any institutional protection or political interference. Lasting peace cannot be built on empty political promises while blood is being shed in the hills; true justice begins only when the state demonstrates the moral courage to hold these killers accountable and deliver swift, meaningful justice to the grieving families of Teikhang.
