Kuki Women Union demands justice after two shot dead in Manipur

LAMKA, October 10, 2026: The Kuki Women Union General Headquarters (KWU) has issued a formal statement of condemnation following two separate fatal shootings in Chassad village over a 24-hour period, demanding immediate legal action and backing a total shutdown of the area.

The KWU detailed that at approximately 9:00 PM on 9 October 2026, Pi Domkhonei Touthang (42), wife of Pu Lallenmang Touthang, was shot dead when personnel from the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) stationed in Chassad opened fire into a gathering of unarmed women. The following day, on 10 October 2026, Michael Ngamminlen Haokip (23), son of Pu Paothang Haokip, was shot dead in the village, allegedly by armed cadres belonging to the NSCN-IM and the Eastern Flank.

In their statement, the KWU strongly condemned the actions of the IRB personnel, asserting that firing multiple rounds into a crowd of peaceful women cannot be dismissed as an accident or an error of judgment. The organization demanded the immediate identification, arrest, and prosecution of all IRB personnel involved under Sections 103 (Murder) and 105 (Culpable Homicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alongside provisions of the Arms Act. They also called for the permanent removal of the IRB post from Chassad village, as well as the arrest of all militants responsible for Michael Ngamminlen Haokip's murder.

The KWU called for a fair, time-bound, and independent inquiry with publicly disclosed findings, alongside full compensation for both grieving families. Criticizing both the Manipur State Government and the Central Government of India for failing to uphold constitutional protections for citizens, the KWU announced its complete solidarity with the Kuki CSO Working Committee's indefinite bandh and total shutdown of Chassad village until all demands are met.
