Zomi Groups Reject Unsanctioned UPF-KNO Joint Statement

LAMKA, October 12, 2026: The Zomi Groups of the United People’s Front (UPF)—comprising the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA), Zou Defence Volunteers (ZDV), and Zomi Re-Unification Front (ZRF)—have issued a comprehensive press statement on September 11, 2026, addressing a joint press release published on September 10, 2026, by the UPF and Kuki National Organisation (KNO) titled "Kuki-Zo SoO Groups".

In the statement signed by Information & Publicity Secretary L.T. Paite, the Zomi Groups outlined all key points regarding their official stance, identity representation, and political commitment:

Lack of Consultation and Authorization: The Zomi Groups were neither consulted nor informed, and their leadership’s consent was neither sought nor obtained before the issuance of the September 10 statement. The document was also not presented to the constituent members of UPF for collective consideration. Consequently, its contents cannot be regarded as a mandated stance of the UPF or as representing ZRA, ZDV, and ZRF.

Concerns Over Identity and Representation: The unilateral use of the nomenclature "Kuki-Zo SoO Groups" has raised serious concerns regarding identity and representation in the public domain. The statement reiterated that "Zomi" is the indigenous identity through which their community identifies itself, and any collective designation must be based on prior consultation and consent.

Respect for Self-Representation: While respecting the right of every community and organization to identify and represent itself according to its own understanding, the Zomi Groups stressed that collective representation must reflect the consent and participation of all entities involved to ensure clarity and accountability before the government and the public.

Commitment to Peaceful Dialogue: The Zomi Groups reaffirmed their commitment to an inclusive, pragmatic, and non-communal approach. They stressed that political issues should be resolved through peaceful, constitutional dialogue, and that differences in identity should not hinder peace when mutual respect and consultation exist.

Purpose of Clarification: The release emphasized that its objective is not to create or widen divisions, but to foster clarity, mutual understanding, and cooperation among all stakeholders as they continue to pursue a durable political settlement acceptable to all communities.
