What the Numbers Reveal

  • PMAY implementation in Manipur is entirely valley-centric.

  • The claim of “Housing for All” collapses when entire regions receive nothing.

  • This is not a data gap; it is policy exclusion recorded in official figures.

Christmas Kindness: Mr Kaisat Kuki’s Free Rides

Not all heroes wear uniforms or hold positions of power. Some quietly serve humanity from the driver’s seat of an autorickshaw. This Christmas, Mr Kaisat Kuki chose compassion over profit by offering free rides to passengers travelling along NH-2 between Motbung and Kangpokpi.

Early in the morning, he filled his fuel tank and pasted a simple message on his autorickshaw: “Christmas Offer – Free Fare Today.” For the rest of the day, he carried commuters without charging a single rupee. Mr Kaisat earns his livelihood by driving this route daily, yet he decided to give back, even when life itself is not easy.

In a region scarred by pain, displacement and uncertainty, such small acts carry deep meaning. Mr Kaisat’s gesture is a quiet reminder that humanity still exists in the Kuki Hills. His kindness speaks louder than speeches, restoring faith in ordinary people doing extraordinary things. This Christmas, his free ride became a journey of hope.

Gawkeu: Traditional Bamboo Spoon of the Thangkhal People

The Gawkeu is a traditional bamboo spoon used by the Thangkhal people. In the Thangkhal dialect, gua means bamboo and keu means spoon. It is made from a single piece of mature bamboo, carefully cut and shaped by hand. The handle is long and smooth, while the bowl is deep and slightly curved, suitable for serving rice, curry, soup and fermented foods.

The Gawkeu is strong, light and eco-friendly. It does not react with hot food and keeps the natural taste intact. Each spoon reflects the skill and patience of traditional craftsmanship passed down through generations. More than a kitchen tool, the Gawkeu represents Thangkhal culture, simplicity and respect for nature, showing how everyday objects carry cultural identity and heritage.

One piece costs only Rs 100.

Zeliangrong United Front Calls for Peace, Rights and End to NSCN-IM Actions

The Zeliangrong political journey is a long history of struggle marked by suffering and martyrdom, sustained by hope, and after decades of denial and suppression has resurfaced for a final settlement with the Government of India through democratic and peaceful negotiations. The formation of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) is a historical necessity rooted in the legacy of the Zeliangrong People's Convention (ZPC). ZUF does not oppose the Naga national movement; it seeks to assert and secure a Zeliangrong homeland. This legitimate objective has been misconstrued, particularly by NSCN-IM, leading to confrontation between the two groups. The Zeliangrong people have endured prolonged exploitation, intimidation, and military domination by NSCN-IM in Zeliangrong areas. As a people's force, ZUF is duty-bound to defend the rights, dignity, and land of its people. Continued targeting, suppression, and violation of human rights under the pretext of Naga nationalism are unacceptable and contrary to both Naga interests and humanitarian principles.

We must all understand that, the Naga cause belongs to all Nagas, irrespective of tribe, community, region, state, or borders, and everyone who belongs to the Naga fold should be treated equally under the same umbrella. In this light, it is troubling that the Zeliangrong community is singled out by NSCN-IM as a threat to Naga national interest. This raises a serious question: has their agenda moved beyond genuine national interest and move toward controlling and preventing a particular community from claiming and exercising its legitimate right to secure a long-pending homeland? When the actual objective is blurred and the priority remains on targeting only a single community through threats, intimidation, and violence, the sincerity of the cause itself becomes questionable. Are such actions truly driven by true nationalism, or by the intent to extract the limited resources of the Zeliangrong people for personal or organizational gain? If similar vicious actions by any group in any other Naga regions or areas would be considered illegitimate or an encroachment from outsiders, how then can such actions by NSCN-IM in Zeliangrong areas be justified in the name of Naga nationalism? Is Naga nationalism for NSCN-IM confined only to Zeliangrong lands? These questions speak for themselves and are clear to any right-thinking mind.

The game of NSCN-IM in Zeliangrong land since the 1990s ethnic clashes that have led to endless communal tension in the region is highly condemnable. Their recent act of sinister design employing Kamson group and implying ZUF of inhumanely harassing the neighboring Kukis in the pretext of anti-narcotic war is another devilish attempt to infuse confusion, commotion and communal tension. If their intention is genuinely to wage an anti-narcotics campaign, why are they not engaging directly themselves? Why resort to such sinister designs on others to bring tension and misunderstanding among the neighbors or within the community? Despite repeated restraint in the interest of complying with public appeals for maintaining peace and harmony, the recent killing of a ZUF cadre at Dolang area indicates clearly their continued aggression and an attempt to challenge us to trigger reciprocal retaliation.

The ZUF shall not remain a mute spectator over such anti-social, anti-national and criminal mediation. Such continuous schemes of attack are nothing but attempts to disturb the credible integrity and progress of the Zeliangrong people and now target to disturb the good progress of the ongoing Zeliangrong political talks with the Government of India. The public is urged to recognize these realities, avoid biased narratives, and speak out against actions that provoke violence and incite communal disharmony and tribal imbalance. For the sake of lasting peace and growth in the Zeliangrong region, NSCN-IM must withdraw their suppressive military operations from Zeliangrong regions.

Indians Who Earn More Than One Crore

THIS map shows the number of Indians who officially earn more than ₹1 crore a year, based only on legitimate, white (tax-reported) income. Even on this conservative basis, the figures reveal striking patterns about India’s economy, regional inequality and centres of wealth creation.

via social media.

Maharashtra clearly dominates, with over 1.24 lakh crore-plus earners, reflecting Mumbai’s role as India’s financial, corporate and entertainment capital. Delhi follows at a distant second, driven by government, business services, real estate and professional incomes. Other economically strong states such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Telangana also show high concentrations, supported by IT, manufacturing, trade and start-up ecosystems.

Large northern states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have far fewer crore earners relative to their population size. This highlights the gap between population growth and high-value economic activity. Eastern and central states such as Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh show very small numbers, pointing to limited industrialization, fewer high-paying jobs and lower urbanization.

The North-East and smaller Union Territories report extremely low figures, which reflects smaller populations, limited corporate presence and fewer high-income professions.

Most importantly, this data captures only declared income. This is just legit/white income—so just imagine the number of people earning in black. Undeclared business profits, cash-based trade and informal wealth are not counted here. Therefore, the real number of crore-level earners is likely significantly higher.

Overall, the data underlines one clear truth: wealth in India is highly concentrated in a few economic hubs, and future growth depends on spreading high-income opportunities beyond these regions.

Maharashtra – 1,24,800

Uttar Pradesh – 24,050

Delhi (UT) – 20,500

Peace Routes Must Respect Fragile Realities in Manipur

THE call by the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), Sadar Hills, to halt a proposed cycling event through Kangpokpi District is not a rejection of peace, but a plea for prudence. In a land scarred by prolonged ethnic violence and deep mistrust, symbolism matters as much as intent. The so-called “Manipur Peace Route”, proposed under the banner of harmony, risks becoming an exercise in insensitivity if it ignores the lived realities of communities along its path. Peace cannot be pedalled through contested spaces without dialogue, consent and careful timing.

COTU’s concern is rooted in context. Kangpokpi District remains fragile, and the memories of violence are neither distant nor abstract. The proposed event coincides with the Christmas season, a period of deep spiritual and cultural significance for the predominantly Christian Kuki-Zo community. At such a time, any activity perceived as provocative—however unintended—has the potential to unsettle an already tense environment. The editorial responsibility here lies in recognising that peace-building is not about public spectacle, but about empathy, restraint and respect for community sentiment.

The authorities, therefore, face a test of judgement. Allowing the cycling event to proceed against expressed objections would signal a troubling disregard for ground realities. COTU’s warning—that responsibility for any fallout would rest squarely with the state—should not be dismissed as rhetoric. Preventive governance is not weakness; it is wisdom. In Manipur’s current climate, the path to peace is narrow and uneven. True reconciliation demands patience, consultation and the humility to pause. Sometimes, the most responsible decision is not to move forward, but to stop, listen and reassess.

COTU Opposes Proposed Cycling Event Through Kangpokpi District

The Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi District, has called upon the concerned authorities to immediately stop a proposed cycling event scheduled to pass through Kangpokpi District on December 19.

In a press release issued by the media cell of the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) on Tuesday (16 Dec 2025), COTU expressed serious concern over the proposed cycling mission by Malem Thongam Meetei, reportedly planned under the banner of the "Manipur Peace Route". The event is scheduled to take place between 8 am and 3 pm on December 19, 2025.

COTU stated that the proposed route through Kangpokpi District could provoke tension and disturb communal harmony, particularly during the festive Christmas season. The organisation emphasised that the Kuki-Zo community of Kangpokpi District, being predominantly Christian, is observing Christmas and does not welcome any activity that may escalate tensions.

The committee reiterated that the Kuki-Zo community is peace-loving and urged the authorities to take preventive measures to avoid any untoward incidents. It cautioned that if any incidents arise in connection with the proposed cycling event, COTU and the Kuki-Zo community of Kangpokpi District should not be held responsible.

According to the press release, COTU maintained that the full responsibility for any such incident would rest with the concerned authorities if the proposed cycling event is allowed to proceed through the district despite objections.

CDM Activist Couple Killed in Southern Myanmar

A recently married couple actively involved in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) were brutally killed on Wednesday in the Tanintharyi region of southern Myanmar, underscoring the grave risks faced by civilians opposing the country's military regime.

The victims have been identified as Mrs Aye Thi Aung, a former public school principal, and her husband. According to local sources, the couple had been engaged in peaceful resistance activities against the junta, which seized power in a military coup in 2021. Mrs Aye Thi Aung was also closely associated with the National Unity Government (NUG) and played a key role in managing its alternative school programme in the region, providing education services outside the control of the military authorities.

Details surrounding the killings remain limited, and no official statement has been issued by the military administration at the time of reporting. However, the incident has sparked renewed concern among pro-democracy groups and human rights advocates, who say it reflects a wider pattern of intimidation and violence against those aligned with the CDM and other opposition movements.

Observers warn that educators, civil servants, and community organisers involved in resistance activities continue to face targeted attacks across Myanmar. The killing of the couple has renewed calls for international attention, accountability, and sustained advocacy for human rights and justice in the conflict-hit country.

KOHUR Urges Supreme Court for Impartial Judges in Manipur Cases

KUKI ORGANIZATION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS TRUST (KOHUR)

Date: 17/12/2025

To,
His Lordship the Chief Justice of India
Supreme Court of India
New Delhi – 110001

Subject: Request for independent and impartial benches of judges in the Manipur High Court in the conflict cases – Regd.

Lordship,

As you know there has been a long standing and unfortunate dispute between the Meitei’s and Kuki’s in the State of Manipur which erupted in long standing conflict where properties were destroyed and many tribals killed. Some of these cases are pending before the High Court at Manipur.

With a heavy heart we write this letter after experiencing a certain imbalance in the allocation of judges for the benches dealing with the Kuki cases. We hesitated to write this letter in the fear that it may be understood wrongly. However, now we are compelled to communicate to you because in case after case justices from the Meitei community are on the benches of the High Court dealing with highly contentious matters regarding the two communities, and justice is not being delivered.

If justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done as well, from our community we feel that it would be impossible to get justice if judges from the Meitei community are constantly dealing with legal matters relating to the conflict between the Meitei’s and Kuki’s. We have seen this in cases and therefore we now write with the request that in cases relating to the tribals no Meitei or Kuki judge should be on the bench, rather since there are judges are available who are neither Meitei’s nor Kuki’s or sentiments and experiences may be respected.

Kindly direct and take into consideration and ensure that judges who are neither Meitei nor Kuki be assigned our cases in the High Court as well as the Lower Courts.

We thank you for this consideration.

Yours sincerely,

(S BENJAMIN MATE)
Chairman,
Kuki Organization For Human Rights Trust

Kuki-Zo Council Slams Torbung IDP Resettlement, Warns of Conflict

Lamka, Dec 17, 2025: The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has expressed grave concern over an incident reported on the night of December 16 in the Torbung buffer zone, calling the situation highly sensitive and warning that recent administrative actions could trigger renewed violence.

In a press release issued by Ginza Vualzong, Secretary, Information and Publicity, Kuki-Zo Council on Wednesday, the Council recalled that the ethnic violence which erupted on May 3, 2023, had its origin in Torbung, an area in Churachandpur district where Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities once coexisted. The area also witnessed the first killing of the conflict, when Pastor Sekhkhohao Kipgen was allegedly beaten to death in broad daylight. According to the KZC, 45 Kuki-Zo lives were lost within the first two days of the violence.

Against this background, the Council strongly criticised the decision of the Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur to flag off the resettlement of Meitei internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Torbung buffer zone. The KZC termed the move "deeply irresponsible and provocative," stating that a sensitive administration would have avoided resettlement in such a volatile area.

The Council warned that allowing Meitei IDPs to resettle in the buffer zone amounts to inviting renewed conflict. It also pointed to earlier attempts by Meitei IDPs to breach the buffer zone during the Sangai Festival as evidence of a pattern of provocation. The KZC demanded that the Deputy Commissioner take responsibility and immediately roll back the resettlement to prevent further escalation.

The press release also raised serious questions over the sequence of events leading up to the incident. The visit of COCOMI leaders to Meitei IDPs at Torbung Mamang Leikai, followed by a public meeting organised by Arambai Tenggol and firing later that night, was described as troubling and indicative of questionable intent.

Reiterating its stand, the Kuki-Zo Council stated that the Kuki-Zo people have consistently exercised restraint and respected buffer-zone arrangements to prevent further bloodshed. It rejected any attempt to blame the community for tensions arising from unilateral administrative decisions and violations of buffer-zone protocols.

The Council further alleged that provocative actions by Meitei groups during the Christmas season reflected a calculated effort to disrupt the peaceful spirit of the Kuki-Zo people.

Calling the Manipur crisis a political issue rather than a mere law-and-order problem, the KZC asserted that the conflict is rooted in ethnic cleansing and can only be resolved through a political solution. It urged the Government of India to recognise that the Kuki-Zo people have been effectively separated from Manipur and to grant them a separate administrative arrangement, which it said they rightfully deserve.

Messi’s India Visit: From Airport Discipline to Viral Football Moments

LIONEL MESSI, widely regarded as the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of world football, visited India and created huge excitement across international media, national news and social media platforms.

Every moment of his journey was closely followed, and even a single photograph with him became something priceless for fans. One such moment came from a South Indian airport, where Messi was seen undergoing routine security checks.

In the photograph, Messi appears calm and simply dressed in a white T-shirt, dark track trousers and trainers. Despite being a global football icon, he patiently stood on the screening platform. The CISF personnel around him looked alert and professional. The frisking was reportedly carried out by Mr Kapmawi Gangte, a CISF guard from Lamka in Outer Manipur. The image strongly reflected discipline and equality before rules — showing that even the world’s greatest footballer must follow security procedures. This moment went viral and became a proud occasion for the people of Lamka.

Football lovers from Kuki-Zo community, including several local footballers and a local fan known as “Thangkhal Messi”, also travelled with friends to New Delhi on Monday, 15 December 2025, to witness the historic visit in Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Young Khalvontawis fans of the GOAT, Lionel Messi, attended the event with great happiness and excitement. Alex Hangminlian, also known as “Messi Thangkhal”, told KV News that the ticket for four persons cost Rs 26,384, adding, “So you can guess how expensive it was.”

In another viral photograph, Messi was seen posing for a cheerful selfie with India’s national football captain SunilChhetri, along with Manipur football stars Chinglensana Singh and BalaDevi, a renowned Meitei woman footballer. The image, taken on the field with a packed stadium in the background, was widely shared and praised for highlighting the contribution of Manipur to Indian football.

While Messi’s Kolkata visit reportedly faced crowd mismanagement and chaos despite a grand statue built in his honour, reports from South India remained largely positive. Together, these viral moments showed humility, discipline and unity through football, bringing pride and joy to fans across Manipur and the country.
