Fuel Transporters Seek Action Against NH-37 Extortion

Imphal, July 15, 2026: A joint representation submitted by several petroleum transporters' and dealers' associations has raised concerns over alleged extortion targeting oil tanker trucks plying the Imphal–Jiribam stretch of National Highway-37 in Manipur.

In a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, the associations stated that since May 2023, petroleum tankers transporting fuel under CRPF escort have allegedly been subjected to illegal collections at several locations along the route.

They claimed that while the unofficial payments initially stood at around ₹200 per trip, the amount has gradually increased to more than ₹7,000, placing a heavy financial burden on transporters. As transport charges are fixed through oil marketing company tenders, the additional expenses are reportedly being borne entirely by the transporters.

The memorandum includes a list of alleged collection points, including Awangkhul, Kambiron, Nungba, Jiribam Parking, Noney and Oinamlong, where varying amounts were reportedly collected from tanker drivers.

The associations expressed concern that the illegal collections could increase further if immediate action is not taken.

The signatories urged the State Government to eliminate the alleged extortion and restore the effectiveness of the security escort system by 30 July 2026. They also warned that if the issue remains unresolved, petroleum transportation services across the state may be suspended from 31 July 2026 onwards.
