A New Chapter of Hope for Churachandpur College

FOUNDED in 1964 under the Latin motto Clarior E Tenebris meaning From Darkness to Light, Churachandpur College (Autonomous) has stood for over six decades as a vital beacon of academic hope in the region. Evolving from its humble beginnings under Guwahati University to achieving government status in 1977, joining Manipur University in 1981, and ultimately securing UGC autonomy in early 2024, the institution now serves over 5,200 students. Yet, sustained structural progress relies heavily on visionary leadership. Having joined the college in June 2007 as a lecturer in Sociology, Ginzamang T. Zomi stepped in as Principal in-charge on 18th May 2026. Since taking the helm, he has catalyzed a remarkable institutional turnaround, demonstrating how administrative dedication directly elevates campus life.

His tenure is anchored in decades of deep academic and administrative experience. Beginning his teaching career in 1993, he worked as a research officer on ICMR-WHO health projects before being appointed as a regular lecturer in 2002 and rising to Associate Professor and Head of the Sociology Department. Over the years, he authored foundational textbooks like An Introduction to Sociology, published extensive research on local social issues, and guided numerous student research projects under IGNOU.

Put into action, this rich background has translated into immediate, practical results across the campus. He spearheaded a week-long cleanliness drive involving 20 dedicated personnel that removed over 60 truckloads of accumulated waste, alongside extensive repairs to administrative and departmental facilities. Modernization efforts included creating dedicated car parking, setting up wall-mounted record storage racks, upgrading the Principal’s office with attached amenities, and installing ceiling fans, campus-wide Wi-Fi, Syntex water tanks, a PNB ATM, two NCC flagpoles, and dedicated spaces for the NCC and NSS. His proactive approach quickly bore fruit on 27th July 2026, when Rev. K. Kamchinkhup, General Secretary of the EBC, inaugurated and prayed for a new Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification plant paired with a 340-foot deep borewell. Highlighting this milestone, the Students’ Union issued an official statement expressing sincere gratitude for providing safe, clean drinking water to students and staff. They noted that this valuable asset belongs to the entire college community and earnestly appealed to everyone to use it responsibly, avoid wastage, and preserve the facility so it can serve the campus for years to come. Additionally, administrative reforms abolished redundant ID fees, made payslip collections free, granted free admissions to union secretaries and freshers’ titleholders, increased evaluation pay for teachers, provided seed grants for student clubs, and introduced proposals for new degree courses, staff expansions, a G+3 building with a modern conference hall, and facilitation centres for displaced students during regional crises.

While physical upgrades and administrative reforms create immediate momentum, the true strength of any educational institution lies in sustaining its overall direction. These comprehensive actions offer clear proof that steady, student-centered leadership can quickly breathe new life into traditional academic spaces. However, preserving this progress will require continuous support from staff, students, and regional authorities alike to ensure these benefits endure over time. If this momentum is carefully nurtured, Churachandpur College will not only honour its founding motto, but also continue to serve as a strong, reliable centre of learning and community growth for many years to come.
