THE recent joint agreement signed by the Principal and Vice Principal of Churachandpur College marks a refreshing and deeply welcome turning point for local higher education. After a period of legal uncertainty that threatened to overshadow the institution, both administrative leaders chose the path of dialogue over discord on 7th September, following a constructive intervention by local student bodies. By pledging to withdraw their pending case from the High Court of Manipur by 20th September, Shri Ginzamang T. Zomi and Smt. Caroline Zothangmawi have demonstrated genuine maturity and leadership. Resolving internal disputes through voluntary compromise rather than prolonged legal battles sets an inspiring example of mutual respect for the entire academic community. It reminds us that institutional harmony must always take precedence over personal differences, especially when the educational futures of young people hang in the balance. With this legal cloud lifted, both administrators deserve praise for listening to the student voice and prioritizing unity. However, the real work begins today. We encourage both leaders to channel this renewed spirit of cooperation into working even harder for the progress and holistic development of their students. Looking ahead, the focus must shift entirely toward expanding the college’s academic horizons, introducing a broader spectrum of undergraduate subjects and actively working to establish post-graduate master’s degree programmes. Churachandpur College stands at the threshold of a promising new chapter, and by turning this peace into active progress, its leadership can build a legacy that truly serves generations to come.
Restoring Accountability and Balance in Manipur
THE recent operations at Molnom and the Gampum designated camp on 7th September, combined with rising tensions over economic blockades, highlight the delicate state of peace in Manipur. The Kuki Women’s Union of Ukhrul District has raised serious and valid questions regarding the heavy-handed nature of the security operation. While any cadres under Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreements must be held strictly accountable if they violate ground rules, the application of state power must never degenerate into collective terror against innocent civilians. Reports of live rounds being fired near villagers, the harassment of women, and intimidation of children by security personnel at Molnom are deeply concerning and demand a transparent, time-bound investigation. Wearing a uniform does not confer immunity from the rule of law, nor should the SoO framework be selectively applied. Simultaneously, the Committee on Tribal Unity in Sadar Hills has issued a stern warning against what it terms a selective economic blockade targeting essential goods, medicine, and human movement. Preventing the free passage of basic necessities along national highways represents a cruel form of collective punishment that only deepens regional hostility. The Manipur government, having previously warned against such blockades, must enforce its own directives without bias. A stable future cannot be built on unilateral force or selective enforcement; the state administration must act as a firm, balanced mediator, upholding justice for past atrocities while strictly protecting civilian rights and ensuring open lifelines for every community.
