Interview: David Tusing

A DUBAI-based journo, who happens to be from Lamka town of Manipur’s Churachandpur district, has done a remarkable job during the coronavirus crisis. This unsung hero has rendered selfless services by arranging the repatriation flights for more than 300 North East Indians stranded in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) while the world is battling with Covid-19 Pandemic.

The first ever chartered flight ‘Fly Dubai’ with 189 passengers from Dubai to Guwahati, Assam took place on July 3, 2020.

The second chartered flight ‘Indigo’ with 171 passengers from Dubai to Guwahati took place on July 23, 2020. Each flight ticket costs over Rs 30K. Then, how much would it cost for 300+ passengers?

The man behind this mission is David Lalzakham Tusing, a journalist and editor in Dubai City.

Here are excerpts from the interview with Mr Bruce K. Thangkhal, Joint Editor, Zogam Today.

Zogam Today (ZT): Hello Mr David, we appreciate your work in Dubai. Can we have a talk?

David Tusing (DT) : Thank you. It will be my pleasure.

ZT: Can you share us about yourself?

DT: I was born in Hill Town, Churachandpur. I am the middle child with 4 other siblings. Growing up, my father owned a chain of book stores called Book Centre as well as a printing press, L&R Printing Press. My mother was a housewife who was deeply involved in social work and church activities.

ZT: Where did you complete your high school?

DT: I was one of the first ever students of Lapuithluaii Foundation School. Although I moved schools a lot, I eventually came back to Foundation School and finished my Class 10 there.

ZT: What was your childhood dream?

DT: I was a loner growing up and was often bullied and made fun of at school because I was different. So I found comfort in books. I read a lot. Also, since my dad owned book stores, I would sit all day at the shop and read and read. That’s why, ever since I was a young boy, I wanted to be a writer.

ZT: Where did you complete your Graduation and PG?

DT: When I finished my Class 10 after two attempts (I failed the first time), I went to Kotagiri, a small hill station in The Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, about an hour’s drive from Ooty. I did my Class 11 and 12 there. Then, upon graduation, I went to Mysore to do my Bachelor’s in Journalism. After that, I came to Bangalore to do my Master’s Degree in Media Studies.

ZT: What's your job at present?

DT: After 15 years working with different newspapers, I have decided to go freelance. So I am currently a free agent, contributing for different newspapers and magazines.

ZT: Which beat are you dealing?

DT: Ever since I started in journalism, I have been focused on lifestyle and entertainment. And that’s the beat I have been doing for the last 15 years. I have however also written on various topics outside of my main interest.

ZT: How do you landed in Dubai?

DT: While I was studying in Bangalore, I was freelancing for a newspaper in Dubai called Emirates Today. They were very impressed with my work and offered me a job. That’s how I landed in Dubai in 2006.

ZT: How do you get internship with CNN in London? Wasn't there an opportunity to work with CNN after your internship?

DT: I won a global journalism award in 2004 called the Ibda’a Media Students Award, organized by the Dubai Media City. I competed against more than 80 journalism students from around the world to win the title.  My prize was an internship with CNN International in London, with all expenses paid for by Dubai Media City.

No, I did not work at CNN after the internship because the UK has strict rules about residency visas for non UK citizens and it was too complicated to pursue.

ZT: What was your first job in Dubai?

DT: I came to Dubai in 2006 and worked as Features Writer with Emirates Today, an English daily that is no longer in publication.

ZT: How long have you been working in Dubai?

DT: I’ve been in Dubai now for 14 years.

ZT: Isn't Dubai expensive? How do you balance your life?

DT: Yes, Dubai is expensive. But since I’ve been here for so many years, I’ve learned how to balance things.

ZT: We heard that you did a commendable work in helping many Indians, especially the North East Indians, to reach home safely from Dubai? How do you do that?

DT: Thank you. I was only a small part of a group of volunteers who came together to help our stranded people go home.

When the Lockdowns began in March, many UAE residents who’ve lost their jobs could not go home. And as the lockdowns extended, they were running out of money.

I am quite active on Twitter and someone sent me a tweet asking of I could help them. That’s how it all started for me. I was just sitting at home and watching Netflix. I thought it might be better if I did something in my free time.

ZT: How many North East Indians have been helped during the global pandemic?

DT: Honestly, I have lost count and I never counted. We've repatriated two full flights to Guwahati. I’ve also been involved with a number of groups and charities who were active during the lockdowns. There have also been situations when we’ve received distress calls, from people who cannot pay their rent or have food to eat, and we’ve been able to find ways around that.

ZT:  During the repatriation of overseas Indians, some said there is no Indian flights availabe for the North East states. What do you think?

DT: Absolutely. The North East region continues to be ignored. And in our time of need, no one was there to look out for us. Other states like Kerala had multiple flights and communities who came together to help their people. For the North East, there were none.

ZT: How can we improve/encourage the NE people when facing this kind of situations? How can we collectively work?

DT: We need to create a platform or some form of social organization that can be the one source of help in situations such as the global pandemic. We’ve been thinking about this and will probably work on setting up one.

ZT:  What kind of compliments have you received?

DT: Just lots of good wishes and thanks.

ZT: When was the campaign for Repatriation Flights began?

DT: I had lots of co-volunteers without whom I couldn’t have done any of what we did. I had leaders from the Mizo, Eimi and Tangkhul communities who were part of my core group.

ZT: You broke a record in Mysore University. Can you share us?

DT: Thank you. I did my Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism in Mysore. It’s a three-year course. Upon graduation, at the valedictory, they award gold medals to the highest scorers in each subject, and I won for Journalism. It was quite an achievement as there are more than 200 institutions under Mysore University.

ZT:  Is there any possibility for North East people to work in Dubai?

DT: Of course. There are many from the North East working here in Dubai.

ZT: You may heard "Racial discrimination" against the North East people in India. What is your reaction?

DT: Yes, I have, and have been a victim many times, back in India and many places around the world I’ve travelled to. Racism is mostly due to ignorance and the best way to tackle it is to calmly and firmly try to explain to the perpetrator why what they’re saying or doing is hurtful. Education is key.

ZT: How can we make Manipur a better state?

DT: Corruption is the root cause of many of our problems. But also, apathy from our political leaders who are not in it for the people they represent but for themselves. If we start voting for leaders who will take care of us as a people, we will go a long way. We desperately need real leaders.

ZT: What example can we draw from Dubai?

DT: Dubai is known for its vision. Sure, the discovery of oil changed the lives of people forever. But it is how they’ve used that oil money to transform their city that’s really inspiring. There is a lesson there for everyone.

ZT: How do you see us -- local dailies and journalists? Any suggestion?

DT: We still have a long way to go in terms of real journalism. True journalism is to serve the public, to give them an unbiased and unfettered picture of the world around them. That also includes asking tough questions and exposing the truth, no matter how uncomfortable or sometimes dangerous. We are yet to get to that point in Lamka. The risks are just too high, and no one’s willing to take them yet.

ZT: Who inspired you to take up this challenges, Repatriation Mission?

DT: My mother. Growing up, she’d always taught us that the more we give, the more we receive. She spent her life giving and giving. I probably got it from her.

ZT: Is there any bitter moment which you won't simply forget?

DT: There were many hardships and there were many days I had to to just switch off my phone because it was becoming too much to handle. The stories were all heartbreaking and that was the only thing that kept me going.

ZT: What's your plan?

DT: I would like to come back to Churachandpur, own a little farm, eat off the land and read lots and lots of books the whole day. Jokes aside, I’d like to continue my social work and turn it into something big. Let’s see.

ZT:  What do you like to convey to our readers?

DT: I still see a lot of the new generation stuck in their old ways, too comfortable to be where they are. We need to dream bigger and aim higher. There is nothing we cannot do if we try. There is no place in the world we cannot conquer.

ZT: Thank you for sparing your valuable time.

DT: Thank you for the opportunity.

ZT: What is the description of the title "Peaceful Smile"?
ZS:  Title: Peaceful Smile
Medium: Pencil on paper
Size: 73cm x 53 cm
Time taken: 70 hours

Description: This sketch depicts the happy and energizing youthful smile of the girl, who is seen playfully smiling as water is being splashed on her face. With wet face and water dripping all over, she is enjoying the moment and cherishing it as she gives her most vibrant smile showing her pearly whites.
The artist skillfully portrays the intricacies of a happy girl with a peaceful smile. The girl is seen looking at someone with playfulness in her eyes as she smiles.

Happiness which is a very broad spectrum for humans as each one finds their happiness in different ways so is the girl here happily smiling with wet face.

Thus, the artist leaves the space open for his audience who can then come up with their own assumptions and conclusions not restricting them to narrow down their thinking.

ZT: What is the description of the title "The Inquisitive Eye"?
ZS: Title: The Inquisitive Eye
Medium:  Pencil on paper
Size:  77cm x 65 cm
Time taken:  80 hours

Description: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it is shown wonderfully in this pencil sketch of the artist. As he sketches the minute details of the eye and makes the audience wonder what the eye is seeing and looking at, giving them a chance to look at the sketch and come up with their own imaginations and views.

"The eyes are the mirror of the soul and reflect everything that seems to be hidden; and like a mirror, they also reflect the person looking into them." - Paulo Coelho.

The artist beautifully demonstrates the peeking eye which is in focus and is looking at the world outside with wonder.

Given to the artist commendable skills one can see the intricate details including the eye lashes and the pupil. So real it seems that one can look at it and find the eye looking back at them, watching them.

ZT: What is the description of the title "Fiorenza"?
ZS: Title:  Fiorenza (old italian)
Medium: Pencil on paper
Size:  77cm x 60 cm
Time taken:  80 hours

Description: A beautiful illustration of a young maiden looking with a very calm and composed, poised grace as delicate as a flower and as fierce as the blazing fire.

The artist skillfully portrays the girl with a wet face and water droplets slowly dripping from her forehead to her hand on which she rests her face gazing with a seductive composure where she can be seen with a slight mocking gaze as her eyes highlight the slight smirk which is hidden in her expression.
The artist beautifully demonstrates the entire face with a very even and real description of the actual real features and not animating the portrait. From the beautiful face to the glossy hair with little strands over her face as she is wet with water dripping all over her.

ZT: Can you name some of your participations in Art Exhibitions?
ZS: (1) National level "Passion Explosion" at Artizen Gallery, ITO, New Delhi 2019. (2) National level "Art n Art" at Artizen Gallery, ITO, New Delhi. 1st Prize Winner of the year 2019 Art n Art (public voting). (3) Art Exhibition at North East Festival at IGNCA 2019. (4) World Indegenous Day, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts 2019. (5) Art Exibition at GOA (Entertainment Society of Goa) 2020. (6) Art Exhibition in Mumbai at Taj Hotel Palace, 2020. (7) Spandan Global: Indo Singapore Art Festival, Singapore, April 17-21 2020, and (8) ART Revolution Taipei 2020 - Taiwan, May 22-25, 2020.

ZT: What is currently in your mind now?
ZS: I am thinking ways to startup my own "Art Studio" in Lamka town, Churachandpur, and wants to organise an awareness about the value and history of ART.

ZT: What is your future plan?
ZS: To exhibit more in the international arena.

ZT: What do you want to convey to art lovers?
ZS: To art lovers, our society could not yet adapt to appreciate the arts and its values. So we must create an awareness to shake all over the world. We as artists, our responsibility is to take ART to higher level so that people will know how to appreciate arts, and then there can be better options for artists around the world.

ZT: Thank you for sparing your time. May God bless you in your future endeavours.
ZS: Thank you so much for the interview.

Dr. Neilenthang Telien was born on May 26, 1985 and is the only son amongst four siblings of Dr. TR Kom and Dr. Alfina Ngakjanei Serto (Late) of Lower Kom Keirap Village, Churachandpur, Manipur. He secured 193rd rank in Civil Services Exam in 2012. He cleared Class X in 83% from St. Joseph's School Imphal in 2001 and class XII (Sc) in 80% from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Imphal in 2003. He has completed MBBS in 67% from Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal in 2010. He was awarded Gold Medal in Gynaeology.

Soon after graduation he worked in a mission hospital in Assam. There he was immensely touched by the plight of the people who were struggling for their two-square meals and ridden with poverty .This completely changed his aim in life, that is, to do something good for the poor people. This young doctor, within few years, became an IAS  by securing the 2nd highest rank amongst the ST candidates and the topper of the entire Northeast states in the Civil Services Exam,2012.

Here is an exclusive interview of Dr. Neilenthang Telien with Mr. Bruce K. Thangkhal, Joint Editor of the CCpur based daily ZOGAM TODAY, at Delhi.

*ZOGAM TODAY=ZT and Neilenthang Telien= NLT

ZT: Its really nice to hear your success . Congratulations!

NLT: Thank You!

ZT: To whom and  what do you credit your success?

NLT: First of all I give the credit to God. Next I would like to thank my family and friends.

ZT:  How do you react when you hear the news?

NLT: My first reaction was- Thank God I don't have to give this exam again!

ZT:  In how many attempt have you achieved this success?

NLT: This is my first attempt.

ZT:  Were you confident enough to  come out successfully in Civil Services Exam?

NLT:  I was quite confident but I was also ready to give another shot.

ZT: Is IAS your ultimate career choice and aim in life?

NLT: No, it was not.

ZT:  What is your position in the result? Which cadre have you opted?

NLT:  My position is 193rd. I have opted for the Manipur cadre.

ZT: What is the secret of your success?

NLT: There is no secret just hard work and dedication.

ZT:  Why do you choose civil services as a career?

NLT: During my work in a mission hospital in Assam I was exposed to poverty and sufferings of which I had no idea about. Just treating the people medically was not giving me any satisfaction and I wanted to do more. Hence my shift to the civil services.

ZT: In your opinion, is the profession of a doctor is less important than a civil servant?

NLT: I believe that no profession is less important than the other. Both of them are equally important.

ZT:  What preference in services have you opted for and any particular reason for that priority?

NLT:  I have opted for the IAS. I have opted for this because I believe that I will be able to work the best as an administrator.

ZT: Were you preparing for other career opportunities as well while preparing for the CS?

NLT: No I was not preparing for other career opportunities.

ZT:  When did you start the preparation for CSE? When should one begin to prepare for this exam?

NLT: I started preparing for this exam from July,2011. There is no perfect time to start preparing for this exam. One should have a mature thinking and be prepared for the hardships that is to be faced while preparing for this exam.

ZT:  What were your optional? On what basis one should select optional? Should one opt for  the subjects studied at college or go for new ones?

NLT: My optional were Medical Science and Public Administration. One should select optional based on interest and  aptitude. Whether one goes for subjects studied before or not is entirely upto the candidate.

ZT:  It is said that CS is one of the toughest nuts to crack. It requires constant and sustained hardwork .How did you keep yourself continuously motivated? What was your source of inspiration?

NLT: I took a practical approach to study. I studied and analyzed issues from the perspective of an administrator which made my studies interesting. I also depended a lot on group discussions. My source of inspiration  was from the poor people I served in Assam whose lives made me take this exam.

ZT:  Tell us something about how do you prepared fro Prelims and Mains?

NLT:  I did integrated study for all the three stages of the exam.  I approached issues analytically and with a critical attitude. This a must now.

ZT: How much important is writing skills in Civil Services Exam?

NLT: It is very important but the thinking skills are more important than writing skills.

ZT: How many hours have you devoted for your preparation in a day?
I devoted around 4-5 hours of dedicated study everyday.

ZT: How do you tackle Negative Markings in Prelims?

NLT:  I tackled this problem by not attempting too much. First I attempted those questions which I was 100% sure. Next I went for those questions which I was 50% sure.

ZT: Do candidates with science or technical background have an advantage over general students?

NLT: No, they don't.

ZT: Where did you prepare for the examination? Does the place of preparation matters?

NLT: I prepared for my exam in Delhi. It matters in the sense you need to buy good materials and find people to discuss with.

ZT:  In the course of preparation, one is faced with many problems, queries and diffulties; where should one go for help or advice, especially the students staying in remote areas?

NLT:  A PERSON WHO HAS GIVEN THIS EXAM SERIOUSLY IS THE BEST GUIDE. There is no other option even for those people staying in remote areas.

ZT: Did you join any coaching institutes? Is it necessary for CS aspirants?

NLT: Coaching is good when one does not have anyone to ask for guidance.

ZT: Which is the most difficult part of CSE and why? How do you prepare to tackle this?

NLT: All parts of the CSE were equally tough. I gave equal weightage to all.

ZT: Did you ever prepare notes?  Can you tell us how helpful it is?

NLT: I did but not all the time. I made newspaper clippings and made side notes. I made notes only for those topics that needed thorough analysis. Note making is good and I would highly recommend it even though it's time consuming.

ZT: How can one score well in Essay, GS and Interview?

NLT: Clarity of ideas, ability to present things in  simple ways and in a concise manner as well as the ability to interlink various subjects will go a long way in this.

ZT: Can you please share us some of the magazines, newspapers, Books etc. which you read for General Studies.

NLT: I read 2 newspapers The Hindu and the The Indian Express. For magazines I depended on Yojana, Kurukshetra, Frontline and EPW.

ZT: Is UPSC really unpredictable?

NLT: Yes ,it is.

ZT: How would you rate luck as far as success in Civil Services is concern?

NLT: 1%(One percent)

ZT: How did you prepare for the interview?

NLT: I attended some mock interviews. But I depended more on discussions with friends.

ZT: Which types of questions were asked in interviews? Did you answer all?

NLT: Questions were asked from different topics. I basically answered all. I have posted my interview on facebook and so everyone can have a look if interested.

ZT: What was your experience of the interview?

NLT: Very interesting. The board was cordial and nice. The interview then went on more like a conversation.

ZT: What is the most important thing, one should keep in mind,  while facing the interview board?

NLT:  Humility, honesty and showing respect are the most important things to remember.

ZT:  During the interview, did the board members ask you any tricky question?

NLT: The chairman asked me one when he asked me to explain the statement- an ordinary life is an extraordinary life with which answer the chairman was very satisfied.

ZT: Was there any specific area they emphasized upon?

NLT: No. Nothing such.

ZT: Are you satisfied with the current pattern of exam? If not, what are your suggestions?

NLT: Iam very satisfied with the current pattern of exam.

ZT: Do you think Civil Services exam is true test of a candidate?

NLT: It is one way of checking and not the true test.

ZT: Does the educational and background of the family of an aspirant have any impact on the CS preparation?

NLT: Yes, it does have some extent but I have known people getting through with bad educational and family background.

ZT: What are your hobbies?

NLT: They include football, basketball and playing the guitar along with singing.

ZT: Who is your favourite person?

NLT: I don't have any particular person in my mind.

ZT: When and why did you come to Delhi?

NLT: I came to Delhi in July, 2011. It was for the purpose of preparing for the CS Exam.

ZT: Have you ever face any sort of discrimination in Delhi?

NLT: Nothing such.

ZT: Why do sometimes people from the North East face discrimination in Delhi? What is the main possible reason according to you?

NLT: Frankly it's because we look different and not all the people of this country know that there is a place called Manipur.

ZT: What role would you like to play for the development of the North East regions in general and Manipur in particular?

NLT: There are a lot of things I want to do. But I would like to concentrate on roads, education and tourism.

ZT: How can corruption be eradicated from our society as well as government institutions?

NLT: Corruption can't be eradicated by one man army. Everyone should do their bit in eradicating this problem. Even though it might take some time I believe that this evil will be removed.

ZT: What step would you suggest Manipur government should take up for those Civil Services aspirants, who are economically weak?

NLT: The government is currently giving incentives and I believe that it is a very important step.

ZT: What is your view on education system in Manipur?

NLT: It is good, but improvements can always be made. May be a shift from routine learning to creative learning and practical based learning will help in improving the education system.

ZT: How do you foresee your future as an administrator?

NLT: I see myself as a bringer of development wherever I am posted and I see myself as working mainly for the poor and the weak so that no one is left out.

ZT: What would you suggest to the aspiring candidates?

NLT: Learn to be creative and always  be curious about new things. Enjoy preparing for the  UPSC and don't let it be a burden.

ZT: Thank you very much for sparing your time and wishing you all the best in your future endeavours!

NLT: Thank You!
