A Visit to Nandi Hills

ON 26th November 2022, we went on a short but exciting trip to Nandi Hills, a popular tourist spot near Bengaluru, Karnataka. We were six people (from UTC Bengaluru) in total—including a couple and a baby. We started early in the morning by bus from Bengaluru, full of excitement and energy. Along the way, we had to change buses two times, and finally, we took a shared auto to reach the hilltop. The journey, though a bit long, was enjoyable and filled with laughter.

Why Nandi Hills Is Famous

Nandi Hills is well known for its beautiful sunrisecool weather, and peaceful natural surroundings. The place is wonderful and blissful, with fresh mountain air and lush greenery all around. It is located about 60 km from Bengaluru and stands at an altitude of approximately 1,478 meters above sea level. Tourists love the green valleys, mist-covered slopes, and ancient structures. It is also a popular destination for trekking, cycling, and weekend getaways from the busy city life.

Nandi Hills – Origin of Six Rivers

One fascinating fact about Nandi Hills is that it is the origin of six rivers, which flow in different directions and support many regions in southern India:

1.   Penna River (Uttara Pinakini) – Flows towards the Deccan Plateau and discharges into the Bay of Bengal.

2. Arkavathi River – Flows westward and joins the Cauvery River.

3.      Palar River – Flows eastward and is a major water source for Chennai City.

4.  Chitravathi River – Flows towards Puttaparthi (Andhra Pradesh) and joins the Pennair River.

5.    Papagni River – Flows through Rayalaseema (Andhra Pradesh) and merges with the Pennar River.

6.    Dakshina Pinakini (South Pinakini) – Flows towards Hosur (Tamil Nadu) and finally empties into the Bay of Bengal.

This makes Nandi Hills not just beautiful, but also geographically important.

Origin and Meaning of the Name “Nandi”

The name “Nandi” comes from the sacred bull Nandi, the vehicle (vahana) of Lord Shiva in Hindu mythology. In Kannada, the local language, “Nandi” means joyful or happy. At the top of the hill, there is a large stone statue of Nandi, placed outside an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that the hills are named after this sacred figure—hence the name, Nandi Hills.

Our Experience

When we reached the hilltop, the view was breathtaking. The sky turned golden as the sun rose slowly behind the hills. The air was fresh and cool. We took many photographs and enjoyed walking around the scenic areas.

However, we had an unexpected and memorable adventure. A monkey suddenly snatched the bag from the woman in our group—without us even noticing. Within seconds, it climbed a tall tree and sat comfortably on a branch, curiously peeking into the bag. We struggled for nearly 30 to 40 minutes, trying to call, scare, and even plead with the monkey to drop the bag.

Instead, the monkey opened the zipper, and began pulling out items one by one. Cosmetics, ID cards, and other small belongings started falling from the tree. We had to search the bushes and grass below to recover the scattered items. Thankfully, we found most of them, although a few things were lost or damaged. It was both a stressful and funny moment, and it taught us an important lesson!

Monkeys are everywhere on Nandi Hills, and visitors should be very careful with personal belongings. If you are carrying chips or any eatables, they will likely follow you wherever you go. If you’re kind enough, you can feed them—but always do so carefully and avoid teasing them.

Later, we visited the ancient Nandi Temple, explored the remains of Tipu Sultan’s Fort, and sat under the shade of trees, enjoying the peace and quiet. Even the baby in our group seemed happy with the fresh mountain air.

We shared some snacks, had a small picnic, and laughed about the monkey story. By late afternoon, we began our return journey, tired but joyful.

Final Thoughts

Nandi Hills is a perfect place for a one-day trip, especially for those who love nature, history, and peaceful surroundings. It is not far from Bengaluru and is suitable for families, friends, and even solo travellers. Just remember to hold your things tightly and stay alert—because the monkeys are always watching!

We had a wonderful time, and it will remain one of our most unforgettable trips.

Manipur CM inaugurates Sangai Festival Churachandpur

CCPUR, 24 NOV 2022(DIO) – Chief Minister N Biren Singh today inaugurated the three-day Sangai Festival, Churachandpur here in the picturesque Geljang Resort, Churachandpur as a part of the on-going Manipur Sangai Festival 2022amidst cultural fervour and musical extravaganza.

Speaking at the occasion, he called upon all concerned to let go past grudges and bitterness and move forward to usher in a new era with a new mind-set. “We must forgive and forget the past with the celebration of this festival of oneness,” he said and added that the theme encompasses equal development, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence of all.

Many leaders had the dreams of achieving unity and oneness of the diverse communities of the State and the Country like different flowers blooming in one garden. That dream has now been realised with the cooperation of the public. “To see this reality makes me emotional”, he said.

The State Government is very practical and is committed to bring equal development to all parts of the State and maintain mutual trust among the public. Manipur is constituted by diverse people and as such development should not concentrate in a particular area. With this commitment, the Government is working for equitable development, Shri N Biren said.  The worth of the Govt or the CM is known by their deeds but not on the basis of word of mouth.

He said that the present State government has been guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mission of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas. These are the basic foundation of the State government's policies and actions.  In line with this mantra, the present State Government is expanding development initiatives in all parts of the State including the remotest parts.

The State Government has started taking up various developmental initiatives in every part of the State after realising the grim reality of the situation in all remote corners of the State through the Go to Village & Go To Hills missions in the last five years. For instance, there were many deficits in Churachandpur hospital during the Corona pandemic. The hospital was equipped better after it was realised by the Govt. Not only this, a medical college is given. He urged the people of Churachandpur to look after the medical college like their own but without any sectarian attitude because “we are one.”

He also stressed the need to foster better inter-community relations by learning and understanding each other particularly languages. Shri Biren further called upon all concerned to do away with ethno-centric and ethnic based politics. Rather, one must realise that they are proud citizens of India and Manipur.

The Chief Minister also urged all concerned to plant more trees in catchment areas so that water in the rivers runs perennially.

The inaugural programme at Geljang was attended amongst others by Smt. Nemcha Kipgen, Minister (Textile, Commerce & Industries); MP Rajya Sabha Maharaj Leishemba Sanajaoba; MLAs Shri Vungzagin Valte , Shri Leishyo Keishing, Shri Md. Abdul Nasir, Dr. Y Radheshyam, Shri LM Khaute, Shri Paolienlal Haokip, Shri Ngursanglur Sanate, Th. Shanti; Shri Vumlunmang Vualnam, Additional CS, Govt of Manipur and other officials from the Government of Manipur, Deputy Commissioner Shri Sharath Chandra Arroju, DLOs, chief of Geljang Shri LK Haokip, CSO and philanthropic leaders.

The Group Young Mizo Association cultural troupe mesmerised the gathering with their bamboo dance performance while the Huyen Lalon Thang-Ta Cultural Association enthralled with their agile performance. Colourful presentation of Kabui Cultural dance, football freestyle show by internet sensation Muani Tangpua and performance on Hingminnasi Eikhoi by little children of St. Paul’s Institute mesmerised the crowd. The second session saw Sound Factory (Drixian Empire) and other local artistes swaying the stage with their performance and cultural dance presentation from the Young Paite Association dance troupe. Magic show by Ozaka Joute and children of Rayburn High School were another attraction.

Later in the day, Chief Minister N Biren Singh flew to Behiang to attend the festival at the newly constructed amphitheatre of Manipur Southern Cultural Centre, Behiang.

Addressing the gathering there, Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed the Govt’s plan to develop Behiang as the second border hub after Moreh. He also mentioned that the MSCC will be developed in such a manner that it is capable of hosting a big function and a NEC funded guest house is also coming up soon.

The CM was accompanied by MP Maharaj Leishemba Sanajaoba; MLAs K Leishyo, Letzamang Haokip, Kimneo Hangshing, Chinlunthang, J Kumo Sha, other high ranking civil and police officials, chiefs and CSOs’ leaders.

The night programme at Behiang Public ground witnessed various local artistes performing apart from traditional fashion parade featuring Miss Kut 2022 and watching of FIFA world cup match in big screen.

The celebration will continue at Geljang Resort tomorrow from 10.30 AM. Cultural performance from all tribes of Churachandpur Khuga Waves (Rock concert) by local artistes and bands, meet the stars programme featuring Soma Laishram, brand ambassador, MSF 2022, performance by folk singer Rosy Heisnam and K-Pop dance by Duality will be the main attractions.
