Brief Comparisons: Khongjom Battle & Anglo-Kuki War

A Brief Comparisons between KHONGJOM BATTLE (1891) and ANGLO-KUKI WAR (1917-1919)

By: Dr.TS Haokip, 28 April, 2025

A brief comparisons between the Khongjom Battle of 1891 and  the Anglo-Kuki War of 1917-1919's significant differences and similarities between these two historical events detailed analysis based on the provided information is as under:

Area of Operation:
Khongjom Battle (1891):  The battle was confined to a relatively small area within the Kingdom of Manipur, specifically around the Khongjom hillock vicinity of Pallel, covering approximately 650 sq. miles.

Anglo-Kuki War (1917-1919): In contrast, the Anglo-Kuki War spread across a much larger area, including Manipur, Naga Hills, North Cachar Hills, Chin Hills, Kabaw Valley, and Somra Tract, covering about 6,000 sq. miles. This vast area indicates the broader impact and reach of the conflict.

Duration of Conflict:
Khongjom Battle (1891): The Khongjom battle lasted for approximately 27 days, from March 31 to April 27, 1891, as part of the larger Anglo-Manipur War.

Anglo-Kuki War (1917-1919): This conflict extended over a much longer period, lasting about 3 years, from October 17, 1917, to December 8, 1919. The prolonged duration reflects the complexity and the extensive resistance faced by the British forces.'

Expenses of War:
Khongjom Battle (1891): While specific expenses are not detailed, the British suffered 4 killed and 15 wounded, whereas the Manipuri side lost over 128 men. The human cost was significant, but the financial burden on the British exchequer is not specified.

Anglo-Kuki War (1917-1919): The British deployed 7,650 transport coolies and incurred substantial losses, including 60 killed, 142 wounded, and 97 died of disease. The Kuki side suffered heavily as well, with an estimated 120 killed, 126 villages burned, and extensive destruction of properties and livestock including 576 mithuns. The British exchequer spent Rs. 28 lakhs, indicating a considerable financial investment in suppressing the rebellion.

Outcome of War:  Khongjom Battle (1891)*: _The British victory led to the installation of Meidingngu Churachand as the king of Manipur. The punitive measures included the hanging of 6 Meitei warriors, including Bir Tikendrajit, by the British administrators.

Anglo-Kuki War (1917-1919): The British successfully suppressed the Kuki rebellion but at a high cost. As punishment, 24 Kuki Chief Warriors were arrested and sentenced to imprisonment for 3-4 years in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Cellular Jail. The British also trifurcated the Kuki ancestral land, dividing it into India, Burma, and Bangladesh, and later fragmented the Kukis into 23 tribes through the 1956 ST/SC Modification Act.

Causes of War: Khongjom Battle (1891): The conflict was triggered by a palace coup in Manipur and the British attempt to discipline Senapati Tikendrajit Singh.

Anglo-Kuki War (1917-1919): The war was sparked by the British demand for labor corps recruitment during World War I, which the Kuki chiefs resisted. This resistance was rooted in the Kukis' desire for autonomy and their opposition to forced labor.

Legacy:
Khongjom Battle (1891): The battle is celebrated as a heroic event in Manipur's history, with April 23 observed as "Khongjom Day".

Anglo-Kuki War (1917-1919): The war is remembered as a symbol of resistance against British colonial rule. Centennial commemorations have been held in Manipur, reflecting the enduring legacy of the conflict.

Conclusion
Both the Khongjom Battle and the Anglo-Kuki War were significant conflicts between the British colonial powers and the indigenous communities of Manipur and surrounding regions.

While the Khongjom Battle was a shorter and more localized conflict, the Anglo-Kuki War was longer and spread over a larger area, reflecting the growing resistance to British rule in the region. The legacy of these conflicts continues to be remembered and commemorated, highlighting the importance of understanding and respecting the historical experiences of the Meitei and Kuki communities participating in these wars.

Stop Promoting Corporate Traps – Invest in Public Skill Training

Strong Criticism of the Public Notice Dated 29th April 2025 Issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Lamka.

The recent public notice issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Lamka promoting a skill training and employment programme in association with HCL TechBee, a private company, raises serious concerns about the direction and responsibility of public office in addressing youth employment and vocational development.

1. A Corporate Trap in the Name of Public Welfare
This so-called opportunity, masked under the guise of a training and employment programme, is essentially a private enterprise marketing strategy. The training, partially subsidised with Rs. 50,000 by the Government of Manipur, still demands the remaining fee from students—pushing them toward loan schemes. This is not empowerment; it's a cleverly disguised economic trap targeting fresh Class XII graduates during a critical transition period in their lives.

2. Misplaced Priorities of the District Administration
It is both shocking and disappointing that the Deputy Commissioner, a public servant entrusted with the welfare of the people, is actively promoting this private corporate agenda. Instead of tapping into central schemes such as the Skill India Mission, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), or initiatives under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, which are meant to provide free skill training, the DC has opted to backdoor private interests with public subsidies.

3. Neglect of Existing Infrastructure: The Case of the Defunct ITI
The only Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Lamka lies neglected. Why is it non-functional? Why has the DC turned a blind eye to revamping or utilising this crucial public institution that could have provided genuine, long-term, job-oriented technical education at no cost? This silence and inaction are alarming.

4. Absence of IT & Electronics Centres in the District
There is currently no fully-equipped IT and Electronics Training Centre in Lamka. Instead of laying a foundation for a robust local technical ecosystem, the administration is relying on external private companies with no commitment to long-term job security or community development.

5. Exploiting the Aspirations of Youth
At a time when Class XII graduates are desperate for a way forward, the DC's office should be thinking of sustainable and secure solutions—ones that can build the lives of our youth, not saddle them with debts and leave them at the mercy of uncertain private employment. There is no job security in these private roles. Employees can be laid off at any moment with no legal recourse.

6. Call for Long-Term Vision and Accountability
The role of the Deputy Commissioner is not to act as a promotional agent for private companies. It is to build, regulate, and channel public resources towards sustainable development. The DC must be held accountable for not initiating reforms in the ITI, for ignoring the establishment of proper IT and vocational training centres, and for failing to chart a long-term roadmap for the youth of Lamka.

The government must withdraw from this ill-planned association and redirect its efforts towards public, free, and sustainable training initiatives. Our children deserve more than short-term, unstable jobs. They deserve a future built on reliable public infrastructure and long-term vocational planning.

Letter to SP/CCPUR

Mr Prakhar Pandey, IPS
Superintendent of Police

29/April/2025, 39 days since Mandeihkim was brutally Raped and murdered. 39 days since her life, her dreams and hopes of Mandeihkim's family were taken away. 39 days since the town witnessed the most brutal crime to date.
39 days ago, on 21st March 2025, Mandeihkim, a 9-years-old voice, was silenced and her rights to live denied by Mr Khawmmalsawm and 39 days since the Lamka Police, under the leadership of Prakhar Pandey, IPS and Chinneilam Gangte, OC WPS, tried to silence and deny the public Justice. BTT will be true to its name and continue to stand for the public and be their voice.

We have been continuously monitoring the case and are equally appalled by how the police have failed to perform their basic duty. So we are, once again, putting it out to the public:

1. *Forensic tests have revealed that Khawmmalsawm is indeed the rapist and murderer* . Despite his unwillingness to confess and plead guilty, test results confirm his DNA. ( *DNA result ah pawngsualtu leh Tualthattu Khawmmalsawm ahi chih chet ahi ta* )

2. *Why is the Women Police OC continuing to remain silent to this day* ? Is she colluding with the perpetrators and intent to hide the truth? She must issue a press statement and inform the public of the case status. ( Women Police OC in bangziak a tunitan dong rape case omlou bang a thusuah neilou ahia? Bang imm a sel sawm ahia? A kin thei pen in mipi lak a thudik puankhiak hi hen)

3. *There can no customary settlements between families in this case;* the rapist and murderer, Khawmmalsawm, must face the Law of the land and be awarded the highest punishment according to the law. (Hiai tungtang ah inndongta kihouna a om thei kei ding a, dan toh kituak in gawtna sang pen piak hi hen)

How many days will it take for the Police force to eventually perform their basic responsibility? Is the Lamka Police a Law Enforcement Agency or an agency that end's Law?

Mr. Dharun Kumar, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Mandeihkim was buried six feet under, is her grave the development plan you spoke of? Do not turn this beautiful town into another Somalia, we understand that you're here for a moment, but this is our Home. So our Heartfelt appeal to you all, the District Administrations and Police, to Live and Let Live. Let Justice get a chance, for a change.

LAMKA: Pausiankip passes away

Pausiankip@Kippi, Bassist of Revenge Against Violence, Dies at 34

Pausiankip, the low-end thunder of Churachandpur's pioneering metal outfit Revenge Against Violence (RAV), passed away on Tuesday morning, leaving behind a legacy that reshaped Lamka's fledgling metal scene. He was 34 years young.

Known for his seismic bass lines and relentless energy on stage, Pausiankip was the living pulse of RAV's sound. From grimy basement gigs to Lamka metal mainstages, his playing carried a grit and soul that gave the band's live shows their undeniable raw power.

RAV stood at the frontline of Lamka's metal underground movement back in the days, one of the few who kept the fires of live metal burning when stages were few and audiences uncertain. At every show, Pausiankip's fierce commitment reminded a generation of Lamka metalheads why the music mattered.

His contribution to RAV's breakout single, "Sin of the World," remains one of the most defining moments for the community. The growl of his bass under that song's haunting riffs will forever echo through the hearts of those who found a language for their rage, hope, and survival in metal.

In a town too often marred by silence and struggle, Pausiankip made noise. Beautiful, defiant noise. And for that, Lamka's metal faithful will never forget him.

Rest easy, brother. The pit awaits.
