Attack on Sahnit Ni: 2 Men and 2 Women Kuki-Zo Innocents Killed

THE tragic loss of Kuki-Zo innocent civilian lives in recent targeted attacks across Manipur represents a grave failure to uphold basic human dignity and peace. On 13 September 2026, a date observed nationwide by the Kuki community as Sahnit Ni or Kuki Black Day to mourn past victims of ethnic strife, horrific new assaults in Kuki-Zo villages such as L. Tollen and Longpi claimed the lives of defenceless community members, including women and an unborn child, while leaving young children severely injured. This solemn occasion marks a deeply painful tradition of mourning rooted in the 1993 massacres, dedicated to honouring hundreds of lost lives and seeking solemn justice. Turning a day meant for quiet remembrance and spiritual healing into a fresh chapter of bloodshed only deepens the wounds of a traumatised population. Official statistics highlight a distressing pattern, recording 24 Kuki-Zo civilian deaths, including two unborn infants, has been attributed to Naga armed groups operating in the region between March and September 2026. These acts of violence demonstrate a complete disregard for human life and threaten to destroy the fragile social fabric of the state. Local representatives, including Member of the Legislative Assembly Kimneo Hangshing, alongside civil bodies like the Kuki-Zo Council, have voiced strong condemnation against these killings, warning that unaddressed violence risks pushing the region back into a wider, full-scale conflict.

Beyond the immediate tragedy, these incidents reveal a dangerous reliance on selective outrage that deeply hampers any meaningful path toward reconciliation. True peace cannot be built when community leaders and political figures choose to highlight the suffering of their own group while ignoring equal suffering among their neighbours. Justice must never be treated as a partisan privilege; claiming victimhood for Naga group while remaining silent on the deaths of Kuki-Zo innocent civilians only breeds further division and bitterness. When civil society and political authorities exhibit double standards, they undermine moral authority and fail in their fundamental obligation to protect every citizen regardless of identity. For genuine healing to begin, leaders across all communities must condemn violence universally, abandon selective silence, and commit to honest dialogue that places human life above ethnic allegiances.

To break this relentless cycle, central and state authorities must act decisively to uphold law and order and eliminate institutional impunity. Armed groups operating without restraint, particularly in areas lacking formal ceasefire frameworks, must be brought to justice under equal application of the law. Allowing militants to target civilians with impunity creates a climate of fear and invites further escalation, leaving vulnerable rural populations completely exposed. Lasting security requires transparent investigations, impartial law enforcement, and strong protection for all defenceless civilians without discrimination. Civil society must unite behind a shared resolve against violence, recognizing that peace is impossible as long as armed factions dictate terms. Only through universal accountability, proactive governance, and an unwavering commitment to equal justice can Manipur hope to secure stability and safeguard future generations.
