Reimagining Doordarshan in the Age of Streaming

WHEN Doordarshan commenced its experimental broadcast on 15th September 1959, few could have foreseen that a modest studio housed within All India Radio in Delhi would revolutionise how a diverse nation saw itself. Initiated as a pilot public service project under the vision of early Indian leadership, including President Dr Rajendra Prasad, and nurtured by key pioneers like its first Director-General P.V. Krishnamoorthy, the network was conceived not for commercial gain but as a force for social upliftment. Beyond social development, Doordarshan became the beating heart of Indian pop culture, uniting millions through legendary sagas like Ramayan and Mahabharat, iconic sports broadcasts, and nation-building initiatives like the 1982 Asian Games in colour. In its initial decades, Doordarshan served as an essential instrument of national integration and community education. Through groundbreaking programming like Krishi Darshan, designed to modernise agricultural practices, and iconic serials that drew families together around a single shared screen, the broadcaster reflected the values, struggles, and regional diversity of a rapidly developing modern India.

​The landscape of Indian broadcasting, however, underwent a seismic shift over the subsequent decades. The arrival of the internet in India in August 1995, followed swiftly by the boom of satellite technology, private news networks, and modern streaming platforms like YouTube, fundamentally altered public viewing habits. Managed today by Prasar Bharati, an autonomous corporation operating under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Doordarshan has seen its once-monopolistic audience share fragment in the face of round-the-clock sensationalism and hyper-personalised digital content. Yet, despite these challenges, the foundational visionaries and early architects of public television deserve immense appreciation for establishing an ethical, trustworthy benchmark of public interest broadcasting. Their commitment to informative, educational, and socially relevant programming established a legacy of credibility that private, profit-driven media often struggles to match in the modern era.

​To remain meaningful in today's fast-paced digital ecosystem, Doordarshan must actively evolve without surrendering its original public service mandate. Instead of competing directly with 24-hour private news channels for sensational headlines, the national broadcaster should leverage its unrivaled rural infrastructure, deep archival library, and multi-language capabilities to build a modern, high-quality digital presence. Investing in user-friendly mobile applications, OTT streaming services, high-definition investigative journalism, expanding regional storytelling, and creating interactive educational content can attract younger, internet-savvy audiences. By marrying its historic commitment to truth and social welfare with contemporary digital delivery formats, Doordarshan can successfully transition from a nostalgic relic of the past into a vital, trusted public voice for the future.
