Congress wins in Mizoram

Aizawl, Dec 9, 2013 [IANS] --- The Congress retained power in Mizoram for the second consecutive time, winning 21 of the 40 seats as the vote count progressed Monday.

Congress leader and Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, 71, was elected to the state assembly for a record ninth time. He contested from two places in central Mizoram and won both seats.

This is for the fifth time the Congress has come to power in the northeastern state of Mizoram, which shares borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh. In the outgoing assembly, the Congress had 32 seats.

"Congress candidates are leading in six more seats over their opposition nominees," Mizoram Joint Chief Electoral Officer H. Lalengmawia told IANS.

Thousands of Congress activists celebrated here and across the state as election results began to pour in.

According to election officials, Congress candidates won 21 seats and were leading in six seats while the opposition three-party alliance Mizo National Front (MNF)-led Mizoram Democratic Alliance (MDA) has won two seats and was ahead in three seats in this state of over one million people.

Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, also state Congress chief, contested from two constituencies and won both Serchhip and Hrangturzo seats defeating his nearest MNF and Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) rivals.

Lal Thanhawla, who with this election has been elected to the state assembly for a record nine times since 1978, defeated his nearest MNF rival C. Lalramzauva, a lawyer and a three-term former legislator, in Serchhip by a margin of 734 votes while he retained the Hrangturzo seat beating MPC opponent Lalthansanga by 1,628 votes.

State Industries and Tourism minister S. Hiato lost his Saiha constituency to MNF nominee K. Beichhua by a narrow margin of 222 votes.

Officials said that Mizoram Home Minister and Congress candidate R. Lalzirliana won the Tawi seat defeating MNF nominee Lalmalsawmi by 947 votes.

Mizoram's Law and School Education Minister and Congress nominee Lalsawta retained his Aizawl East II seat defeating his nearest MNF candidate Sailothanga Sailo by a margin of just 177 votes.

Food, Civil Supplies, Environment and Forest Minister and Congress candidate H. Rohluna retained his Lengteng seat in southern Mizoram defeating his MNF candidate L. Thangmawia by a narrow margin of 167 votes.

Only non-Mizo Congress candidate and Chakma tribe leader Buddha Dhan Chakma won the Tuichawng seat in southern Mizoram beating MNF nominee Rasik Mohan Chakma by a big margin of 8,726 votes.

"In the South Tuipui seat, sitting Congress legislator John Siamkunga retained the seat defeating opposition ZNP (Zoram Nationalist Party) nominee J. Lalchhuana by a margin of 1568 votes," officials told reporters.

Senior Congress leader S. Laldingliana retains his Lunglei South seat defeating his nearest MNF candidate K. Pachhunga by 450 votes.

Unlike the last assembly polls in 2008, the Congress did well in both southern and northern Mizoram which shares borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh.

MNF candidate Lalrinawma wrested the Tuikum seat defeating Congress aspirant K. Lianzuala by a thin margin of only 14 votes.

Monday's vote count would decide the political fate of 142 candidates, including six women.

"Under tight security blanket, counting of ballots have been under way in eight district headquarters simultaneously since 8 a.m. Final results are likely to be out by late afternoon or by evening," Mizoram Joint Chief Electoral Officer H. Lalengmawia told IANS.

Over 81 percent of the total 690,860 voters exercised their franchise across the state Nov 25 to elect a new 40-member assembly.

Modi’s Himalayan miracle

June 26, 2013 [TOI] --- On the evening of Friday, June 21, as India reeled from the shock of the calamity in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi landed up in Dehradun with a handful of officers. By Sunday, it was claimed that he had rescued 15,000 stranded Gujaratis from the wreckage of Uttarakhand and sent these grateful folks back home.

This miracle was played up in media. But how was this feat achieved in a day or so, when India's entire military establishment has struggled to rescue around 40,000 people over 10 days?

Reports say that Modi pulled off this coup with a fleet of 80 Innovas. How did these cars manage to reach places like Kedarnath, across roads that have been washed away, over landslides that have wrecked most access routes?

But let us assume Modi's Innovas had wings as well as helicopter rotors. Including the driver, an Innova is designed to carry seven people. In a tough situation, assume you could pack nine passengers into each car. In that case, a convoy of 80 Innovas could ferry 720 people down the mountains to Dehradun at one go. To get 15,000 people down, the convoy would need to make 21 round trips.

The distance between Dehradun and Kedarnath is 221 km. So 21 trips up and down would mean that each Innova would have to travel nearly 9,300 km.

It takes longer to travel in the hills than in the plains. So, assuming an average speed of 40 km per hour, it would take 233 hours of driving to pull off the feat.

This assumes non-stop driving, without a second's rest to identify the Gujaratis to be rescued and keeping the rest of the distressed folk at bay, or any time to load and unload the vehicles. And forget about any downtime for the gallant rescuers.

That is nearly 10 days of miraculous work. And Modi pulled it off in a day.

Actually, in less than a day: a breathless media reported that by Saturday, 25 luxury buses had brought a group of Gujaratis back to Delhi. For some reason, four Boeing aircraft also idled in some undisclosed place nearby.

Modi, ever modest, himself did not make the claim of rescuing 15,000 Gujaratis from Himalayan disaster in a day. It was likely dumped on a gullible media by his public relations agency, an American outfit called Apco Worldwide. In 2007, Apco was hired, ostensibly to boost the Vibrant Gujarat summits, but to actually burnish Modi's image, for $25,000 a month.

He is in good company. Apco has worked for the dictator of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbaev, the governments of Malaysia and Israel and the American tobacco lobby.

For the latter, it set up front organisations to rubbish evidence which proved that tobacco causes cancer. Apco has also worked for pariah regimes like Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan and Nigerian strongman Sani Abacha.

Its powerful advisory council includes former Israeli diplomats Itamar Rabinovich and Shimon Stein, as well as Doron Bergerbest-Eilon, who was the highest ranked officer in the Israel security agency.

Apco is credited with Modi's makeover and his holographic campaigns. Before Apco, Vibrant Gujarat was a tame affair: the first three summits generated investment promi-ses between $14 billion and $150 billion. After Apco, in 2009 and 2011, these jumped to $253 billion and $450 billion.

Apco worked tirelessly to rope in investor interest from America. It also lobbied with politicians in Washington to remove the ban on Modi travelling to the US. The ban was imposed after the massacre of Muslims in Gujarat as Modi presided over the state in 2002. So far, Apco hasn't succeeded in getting Modi a US visa.

And the Vibrant Gujarat numbers are all hot air. An analysis by my colleague Kingshuk Nag in his biography of Modi shows that only 3.2% of the 2009 number has materialised on the ground. Of the 2011 figure, a mere 0.5% is for real.

But Modi does not need Apco to lie. In 2005 he announced that state-owned company GSPC had made India's biggest gas discovery: 20 trillion cubic feet (tcf) valued at more than $50 billion, off Andhra Pradesh. This was 40% more than what Reliance had found in the same area. Modi then egged on GSPC to grab projects in Egypt, Yemen and Australia.

Many suspected that Modi's gas claim was hot air, but in the absence of evidence few could say so. But by 2012, the Centre's directorate general of hydrocarbons (DGH), which analyses and certifies all energy finds, said that it could vouch for only a tenth of Modi's claim: there was only 2 tcf of gas. And that too in areas tough to exploit.

Meanwhile, under Modi's rousing leadership, GSPC had poured in nearly $2 billion into exploration, much of it raised as debt based on its supposed 20 tcf gas find. When the gas vanished, GSPC went bust.

To rescue it, Modi asked the company to venture out into more areas, like city gas distribution. There have been problems with these businesses as well, including a very dubious transaction with a company in Barbados.

In every area the Modi narrative is a tale of bluster and bluff. But his Himalayan miracle is a barefaced, cynical lie. [TOI]

Rahul Gandhi leaves out burning issues from speech during brief sojourn in State

IMPHAL, December 10: All India Congress Committee general secretary, Rahul Gandhi visited the state today for a brief one and half hour stay, amidst a tight security arrangement.

During his short stay, the AICC general secretary attended a state level convention of local bodies' elected members on 'local self-governance and 16 point flagship programme of the UPA as the chief guest at the Hapta Kangjeibung.

The convention was also attended by MPCC president Gaikhangam and state Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh as president and guest of honour respectively.

The AICC leader was received by a team led by the MPCC president, Gaikhangam and state Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh at the Imphal Tulihal Airport after his special flight landed at 11:55am.

Rahul Gandhi went directly to Hapta Kangjeibung the venue for the convention, where he was received with loud slogan shoutings- "Rahul Gandhi Zindabad", "Congress party Zindabad", etc by party workers and leaders.

Starting his speech exactly at 1pm, the AICC general secretary while expressing his fondness for the state said he considers Manipur as his "second home". He continued by expressing his happiness in visiting the North Eastern states including Manipur.

"Being a politician, I often ask myself on what steps I should take up for the benefit and welfare of the people", he said before continuing, "I often consider the principles which guide a politician and about how I should use it".

Continuing with his speech, the AICC general secretary said that these days, politicians seem to be oblivious of long term visions.

Dwelling further on the issue, he said a politician should be able to listen to the people's voice if he aspires to serve the people.

Watching boxer Mary Kom during the London Olympic, he thought to himself that she too is from the same family.

Though the states may be far from one another, all states are from just one country, he said.
The Congress party has presented several schemes for the people like the PMGSY, MGNREGA, RTI, RTE and Right to Food, however all such initiatives of the Congress will only succeed if the 60 MLAs and 4000 local body representatives work hand in hand, he said.

The AICC general secretary also said that the process to introduce the devolution of power system which is still absent in states like Jharkhand and J&K is on.

Quoting his late father former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi; the Gandhi scion said out of every Re 1 invested by the government for the people, only 15 paise reaches the public.

The AICC leader also said that the government in order to bring a direct cash transfer of government money to the actual beneficiaries the general public, the centre will soon implement a Rs 200 crore scheme.

Today's vote of thanks was addressed by Health Minister Phungzathang, however the speech had to end abruptly after the spectators and supporters started to leave the ground as soon as the AICC general secretary ended his speech.

Meanwhile, after coming down from the stage, Rahul Gandhi broke away from the group accompanying him including state Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, MPCC president Gaikhangam and other and mingled with the crowd of supporters through the wooden railings. The AICC general secretary even went to the extent of shaking hands with everyone by crossing the wooden fencing.

Meanwhile, speaking at the function, the state Chief Minister said, "Today I acknowledge the tremendous contribution made by the Congress Party-led UPA Government at the Centre to bridge the infrastructure gap to some extent".

"We believe the Congress Party-led Union Government's commitment to Manipur's development is unparalleled in history. We continue to look forward to more assistance in the years to come", the state Chief Minister said.

Addressing the visiting AICC general secretary, he continued, "Rahul Gandhi as you know, my state has a very rich cultural heritage".

"The people of Manipur have hope and faith in Congress party to bring the development to Manipur which had been shown in the last Assembly Elections 2012 by giving historic victory to the Congress party for the third consecutive term", he continued.

The state Chief Minister also elaborated on the various successful ventures of the Congress in the state including the conduct of ADC election by the Congress led then state government in the five hill districts of the state.

"To bring more transparency in Local Self government, the process of making Ombudsman Act in the pipe line and will be brought sooner", the CM continued.

Regarding the 16 points Flagship programmes of the Congress led UPA government, the CM said, "The congress led state government has imple ented 16 point Flagship schemes of Congress led UPA government in delivering its objectives and services to the people".
"As the main motto of Congress led Government at Centre to fight corruption and promote transparency, the RTI act has been implemented effectively in Manipur by the present Congress Government here", he said.

On the other hand women supporters who had arrived to attend the function were not allowed to carry their hand bags inside the venue and as such they had to leave their bags at the nearby hotels and shops. The supporters were also not allowed to carry anything including water bottles, papers, pens and even the Congress flags, festoons, banners.
Some of the supporters who had nowhere to leave their belongings had to stand outside the venue.

As soon as Rahul Gandhi entered the venue, the police denied everyone outside the venue entry inside, which angered a lot of the supporters. The supporters were however admitted in the end.
