Four Years On: CDF-Tonzang and the Battle for Democracy in Myanmar's Zo Region

The Chinland Defence Force - Tonzang (CDF-Tonzang) is a Zo armed resistance group in Myanmar. It was established in the wake of the military coup on February 1, 2021. Like many other local defense forces that sprang up across the country, the CDF-Tonzang was formed by Zo civilian volunteers in the Tonzang and Tedim townships of Chin State to resist the military junta's violent suppression of pro-democracy protests and to protect their communities.

Democracy, at its core, is a system of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system. It emphasizes principles like the rule of law, protection of human rights, freedom of speech and assembly, and the equality of all citizens.Abraham Lincoln famously defined democracy as "government of the people, by the people, for the people." This concise definition encapsulates the essence of democracy: that the government derives its legitimacy and authority from the consent of the governed and should operate in their best interests.

For the people of Myanmar, and particularly for the Zo communities in Tonzang and Tedim, liberty and equality are fundamental aspirations that have been denied under decades of military rule.Liberty signifies freedom from oppression, the ability to live without fear of arbitrary arrest, detention, or violence, and the right to express their cultural and political identities freely. For the Zo people, this includes the freedom to practice their traditions, speak their languages, and maintain their unique cultural heritage without state interference. Equality means that all individuals, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, or background, should have the same rights and opportunities under the law. For the diverse ethnic groups in Myanmar, including the Zo, equality is crucial to ending decades of discrimination and marginalization, ensuring fair representation in governance, and fostering a sense of national unity based on mutual respect. In the Zo area, these principles are particularly important as the communities have historically faced challenges related to their distinct ethnic and cultural identity within the larger Burmese context. The fight for democracy is intrinsically linked to their struggle for self-determination and the preservation of their way of life.

The international Zo/Zou diaspora should support the CDF-Tonzang for several compelling reasons:
*Solidarity and Kinship*: As members of the same ethnic community, the diaspora has a natural empathy and concern for the safety and well-being of their kin in Myanmar who are facing violence and oppression. Supporting the CDF-Tonzang is an act of solidarity with their struggle for freedom and dignity.
*Preservation of Identity*: The fight for democracy in the Zo areas is also a fight to protect their unique cultural identity, languages, and traditions, which have been marginalized under military rule. Supporting the CDF-Tonzang contributes to the preservation and potential flourishing of Zo/Zou identity within a more democratic and federal Myanmar.
*Humanitarian Concerns*: The ongoing conflict has resulted in displacement, loss of life, and a dire humanitarian crisis in Chin State. Support for the CDF-Tonzang can also translate into providing much-needed humanitarian aid and resources to affected communities.
*Support for Democracy*: The CDF-Tonzang is actively participating in the broader movement to overthrow the military junta and establish a federal democratic union in Myanmar, aligned with the National Unity Government (NUG) and the Chinland Council (CC). Supporting them is an investment in a more just and equitable future for all the people of Myanmar.
*Amplifying Their Voice*: The international diaspora has the resources and platforms to raise awareness about the situation in Chin State and the efforts of groups like the CDF-Tonzang on the global stage, advocating for international support and intervention.

While specific details about the progress of individual resistance groups can be fluid and sometimes difficult to verify independently, it's generally acknowledged that anti-junta forces in Chin State, including the CDF-Tonzang, have demonstrated significant resilience and made notable progress in several areas:
*Effective Resistance*: They have engaged in armed resistance against the military junta, defending their territories and, in some instances, launching successful offensives against military outposts and convoys.
*Control of Territory*: There are reports suggesting that resistance forces in Chin State have gained control or significant influence over certain areas, limiting the junta's administrative and military presence.
*Coordination and Unity*: The formation of the Chinland Council (CC) demonstrates a significant step towards greater coordination and unity among various resistance groups in the state, enhancing their collective strength and strategic capabilities. Their alignment with the National Unity Government (NUG) further strengthens this unified front.
*Local Support*: These groups generally enjoy strong support from the local population, which provides them with intelligence, supplies, and recruits. This deep connection to the community is a significant advantage.
*Symbol of Resistance*: They have become a powerful symbol of resistance against the military dictatorship, inspiring hope and resilience among the people of Myanmar.
It's important to note that the conflict is ongoing, and the military junta possesses superior firepower. However, the determination and strategic gains of the anti-junta forces in Chin State, including the CDF-Tonzang, represent a significant challenge to the military's authority.

To the brave public and the courageous fighters of the CDF-Tonzang, your unwavering commitment to democracy and freedom in the face of brutal oppression is an inspiration to us all. Your struggle is not just a fight for a system of governance; it is a profound battle for the very essence of your identity – the preservation, protection, and propagation of the rich and unique Zo/Zou heritage. By standing firm against tyranny, you are not only striving for a future where your rights and liberties are respected but also ensuring that the distinct tapestry of your culture and language will continue to thrive for generations to come. The world watches and admires your courage. Know that your sacrifices and resilience are not in vain, and the spirit of freedom and self-determination that burns within you will ultimately prevail. Keep fighting, keep believing, and know that you are not alone in this vital struggle.

Dr. Hegin Tungdim vowed to grow his hair long

Dr. Hegin Tungdim, an orthopedist vowed to grow his hair long as a sign of non-violent, peaceful protest against the injustices suffered by his people and the government of India's refusal to provide justice.  On May 3,  2025 the second anniversary of the Meitei attack on the Kuki-Zos, Dr. Hegin vowed to let his hair grow long as a reminder to the nation he loves. He stated, "Justice is long overdue" for his people, who have given so much to India.

****

DR. P.HEGIN TUNGDIM RESOLVES ON 3rd MAY, 2025 : "I WILL GROW LONG HAIRS!"
The ongoing Meitei-Kuki Zos conflict is no accident but a conscious, well-planned and pre-meditated ethnic cleansing progrom by the majority meiteis who were supposed to be guardians of the minority community. They have failed Dr. B.R.Ambedkar, the Chief Architect of the Indian Constitution who stated, "the stability of a nation depends on the mentality of the majority community". Beside the many selfish things they have done in the past, here is a list of some of the many indelible traumas they have done in recent times:-
January 6 and 16, 2006: At least 25 women including minor girls were raped and molested in Parbung and Lungthulien in Tipaimukh sub-division of Churachandpur. The same year and the following year, many men and women including minors suffered landmines injury claiming few lives and many have been maimed for life.
April 14, 2016: Two underage girls were waylaid by seven youngsters while they were returning from a Thabal Chongba (Moonlight dance) in Imphal and were gangraped in a nearby foothill.
May 4, 2023: Two women, one 21 years young unmarried and the other in her 40's, wife of an Ex-army (Kargil hero) were stripped, paraded naked, molested in broad daylight for all the world to see and later gang raped at Nongpok Sekmai, Imphal East only to be released the next day. The video leaked through media houses that shook the nation and the world showed that there were at least a 100 men following the already naked women being walked to an open field as they were molested ceaselessly, writhing in pain, in shame, in fear and in helplessness with not a single righteous man or woman in that crowd to at least try to stop the perpetrators, even the police personnels there were reportedly turning a deaf ear. The brother and father of the younger victim were mercilessly killed in front of her as they tried to protect her. The crowd in one accord committed the unthinkables.
May 4, 2023 (same day as above): Two young girls namely Olivia Chongloi (21 yrs) and Florence Hangshing (24 years), who were working in a Car wash in Konung Mamang, near Palace Compound in Imphal to support their younger siblings' studies were gangraped from 5:00-8:00 PM and their body parts were mutilated painfully part by part as they were dying slowly in pain, in shame and in helplessness!
May 15, 2023: An 18 years young girl hiding in another community's house was abducted by four men in purple color car and was taken to Wangkhei Ayangpalli and was handed over to Meira Paibis who in turn handed over her to AT (Arambai Tenggols) with an instruction to kill her. She was then shoved into a car and was taken to a hillock in Bishnupur District, butally beaten and gang raped by three men. Mustering courage, she jumped and hurled down the slope and landed in a road, only to be rescued by a rickshaw puller later. (In an interview with the German news Channel DW, Konsam Monica, a Meira Paibi leader justified the rapes of Kuki Zo women saying, "the rapes of Kuki Zo Women were justified because it is war").
June 4, 2023: A bullet injured seven years young boy Tonsing Hangshing and her Meitei mother and her Meitei friend were stopped at Iroishenba, Imphal and were all burnt alive inside their ambulance by a mob led by Meira Paibis while seeking emergency medical attention.
July 2, 2023: Mr David Thiek, a resident of Langza in Churachandpur district was captured alive, his left forearm was first chopped off with a Dao and was mockingly asked to pick it up with his right hand which was then cut off, then his remaining body parts were cut one after another alive as he writhed in pain pleading for mercy, finally to be decapitated and the decapitated head held by the main culprit on his left hand as though it were a trophy, only to hang it on the pole nearby. The remaining body parts were burnt to ashes.
November 7, 2024: A 31 years young school teacher Mrs. Zosangkim Hmar of Zairawn village, Jiribam was shot on the thigh, raped, her body cut into pieces and burnt, her skull cut opened and her brain taken out and put in a plastic bag.
April 28, 2025: A young Kuki Zo woman married faithfully to a Meitei Khaidem boy from Tangjeng village was beaten up by her husband, tied to the bed by her in-laws for 3 days without food only to be rescued by Kabui community who handed her over to KKL (Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi).
Meiteis'most celebrated singer Mr Jayenta@Tapta's Kuki Zos hate song series titled "Kukiland Songs" has released his 20th song in the series. Its hatred loaded contents are inerasable from the young Meitei minds.
The hate slogan "Kuki tumna hat lo!" meaning "Ännihilate the Kukis" is heard chanted in many public gatherings, sad of them most is the instance where school children were made to pronounce in loud and clear in recent rallies in the streets in Imphal and in front of the Raj Bhavan still ring like they happened just now.
The list goes on….!
All these atrocities have been willfully and consciously perpetrated on the minority Kuki Zo community by the Majority Meitei community, who have deliberately failed in their responsibility to keep Manipur stable and intact. There sure is no way that the minority Kuki Zo community can put faith on this majority community again ever. They have been hated so much, so much so that they will not be accepted to live in Imphal again. Physical separation has happened, Kuki Zos have been forcibly chased into their ancestral land. They now need to govern themselves, SEPARATE ADMINISTRATION is no longer a demand but a necessity and the only way forward!
I Dr. P.Hegin Tungdim, the first Orthopaedics Surgeon amongst the Kuki Zo people in Manipur call upon the Government of India (GoI) and the conscience of this great nation, which was once subjugated and oppressed by the British colonialists and for whose freedom, our Kuki Zo  fore-fathers fought them for three long years (1917-1919) and caused much damage to the Oppressors and again joined the INA (Indian National Army) founded by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in 1892 in largest numbers. Out of the 198 soldiers from Manipur martyred in the national liberation movement, 170 belonged to the Kuki Zo community.
And as a sign of non-violent peaceful protest for the injustices meted out to my people and the willful denial of Justice on the part of the GoI, I on this day the 3rd of May, 2025 on the 2nd Anniversary of the Meiteis onslaught on the Kuki Zos vowed to grow long hairs as a reminder to this great nation I love much, "JUSTICE IS LONG OVERDUE" for my people who gave their all for this great Nation called "INDIA". Jai Hind!!

Southern Manipur Missionary Day : May 7

*Missionary Day chibai! Manipur Simlam gam ah Christian masapen Pu Thangkai leh Pu Lungpau-te jana sângpên i piau a hi. Amau ziak in mi tamtak in kumtuang hinna I nei khawlaw u a hi.*

*BLESSED MISSIONARY DAY*

Christian missionaries first reached Manipur in 1894. William Pettigrew, an Anglican missionary, arrived in Imphal on February 6, 1894, with the intention of spreading Christianity. He initially faced restrictions on preaching and began teaching the children of government officials. He later established a school and mission center in Imphal and subsequently worked in the hills of Manipur.

*How May 7 came to be Observed as Missionary Day?*

In Manipur Christianity made its entrance through two routes. One is through the Northern Route and pioneered by William Pettigrew an Arthington Aborigines Mission arriving at Imphal on February 6, 1894. He later joined with the Baptist Mission and that is why most churches in the North have Baptist background. Christianity made its first entrance in the district of Churachandpur from the neighboring Mizoram state in 1910. Watkin R. Roberts, a young missionary from Wales, who had come to help Dr. P Fraser a Missionary at Aizawl, Mizoram, became the man who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to the people of Churachandpur district.

The Gospel of John which was translated into Lushai dialect had been distributed among the people for evangelistic purpose, and copies of the booklet were also circulated to the chiefs of the villages. Kamkholun Singson, Chief of Senvon also received one such copy and could not understand its contents. He wrote back to the senders inviting them to come and explain the booklet. On receiving the invitation to explain the Gospel, Watkin Roberts accompanied by two of their supported students from Manipur, Thangkhai Vaiphei and Lungpau Vaiphei , came to meet Kamkholun Singson the chief of Senvon, a Thadou-Kuki village to explain the Gospel to him and the Villagers. That was in early 1910 and no explicit record of the particular date has been found.

On their way back at Vervek village in Mizoram, his companions Thangkai and Lungpau decided to become Christians and received their baptism. Once the team was back in Aijawl, Dr. P. Fraser and Watkin R. Roberts went into immediate preparation to send missionaries to Senvon village. They sent a telegraph message to the Political Agent in Manipur Lt. Major Cole requesting him permission to send their men into Manipur. As soon as an affirmative reply was received, they asked for volunteers among their supported students and three persons- Savawma, Vanzika and Thangchhingpuia (known as Taitea)- came forward to work among the people of Manipur South.

Within three months after their initial visit these three young men were sent to work among the people of Senvon. They left Aijawl and after a few days crossed the Tuivai river at Rahnamchhuah. There were some Meitei people cutting bamboo who helped them crossed the river by their small boats. After being transported to the other side of the river, the Missionary trio spent a few minutes in prayer, committing themselves afresh for the task that is before them. They sang a “O God we thank you for your Gospel” and after giving thanks to God in prayer they proceeded and entered the village called Senvon to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The day was May 7, 1910 and this day has been observed as Missionary Day by the churches for the last fifty years now.

In fact, the observation of May 7 as a Missionary Day was started by some local churches in and around Senvon village during the mid nineteen twenties. As more local churches began observing this day, the Leaders’ Conference of the North East India General Mission adopted a resolution in 1960 to observe this Day as a Missionary Day by all churches. This decision was well accepted by the general Christian population that even those outside of the NEIGM churches have also been observing this Day. Now, it is not only the churches observing May 7 as a Missionary Day.

The first Mission founded by Walkin Robert at Senvon was known as the Thadou Kuki Pioneer Mission. Christianity spread so fast that it took only a few years to spread across the whole of Manipur South hill region. The first Annual Conference was held at Senvon (under the Chiefship of Pu. Kamkholun Singson) on 26th December, 1914. The number of believers increased every day and after five years the number of believers reached 1000. As the number of believers increased there was a need to set up a sub-centre. The first sub-centre was set up in 1911 at Khopibung village (under the chiefship of Pu Bungkhothang Sitkil/ Singson) in Churachandpur.

In 1924, the gospel reached almost every nook and corner of Manipur southern hill. The Thadou Kuki Pioneer Mission was changed to Northeast India General Mission (NEIGM). For better administration and communication the headquarter of the Mission was shifted from Senvon to Lakhimpur. As the number of believers further increased, the need arose for a Bible School to teach Bible course to new believers. Rev. Paul Rostad and his wife Ella Rostad reached Lakhimpur on 9th March, 1928 to start the school. Rev Paul Rostad graduated from Moody Bible Institution, Chicago USA. Moody Bible Institution is an evangelical dispensationalist college where the doctrines of the Bible are taught. Rev Paul and his wife established a Bible college at Lakhimpur and the Bible college was named after the pioneer missionary “Dinwidie” as "Dinwidie Bible School”. Many Singsit pioneers have graduated from this Bible school.  Pu S.T. Henpu and Pastor Tongkhokai Singson are among the first Bible students from the Thadou tribe.

In the year 1930, the mission headquarter was shifted again from Lakhimpur to Churachandpur. In 1967, Rev Khupjapao Singson became the first General Secretary among the indigenous people. Rev K. Singson was the first to graduate B.D. (Bachalor of Divinity) from the Thadou tribe. Tragically, he met with an accident and died in 1979. His premature death was a great loss for the Singsit as well as the NEIGM.

STAY BLESSED 🙏

KIM PRESS RELEASE: RSS

PRESS RELEASE
KIM Secretariat, the 6th May, 2025

04/KIM/PR/21-94: Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) strongly condemns the recent announcement made by
the Rashtrahit Sarvopari Sangathan (RSS) and its affiliated Hindu organisations to launch a so-called "Chalo Manipur" march, which openly calls for lakhs of individuals to enter Kuki-inhabited hill areas under the guise of "rehabilitating displaced Meiteis." This provocative campaign is not only deeply
irresponsible but a deliberate attempt to escalate the already volatile situation in Manipur and further incite ethnic violence.

Moreover, attempts to portray the proposed march as a religious rehabilitation effort are disingenuous
and dangerous. The so-called "Chalo Manipur" campaign is a veiled effort to forcibly push Meiteis into
Kuki territories, with full awareness that this would lead to fresh clashes, communal tension, and
bloodshed.

This march, flagged off in New Delhi by a coalition of right-wing organisations, is nothing but a reckless mobilization intended to provoke hostilities and disrupt peace in the hills. It aligns disturbingly with Chief Minister N. Biren Singh's one-sided governance, which has openly supported Meitei
vigilante groups and has remained silent or complicit when atrocities are committed against tribals. The state machinery has consistently failed to protect minority hill communities, and this latest move appears to be a continuation of a broader plan to eliminate or forcibly displace Kukis from their
ancestral lands.

The Kuki Inpi therefore calls on the Government of India and security agencies to immediately intervene and prevent any such provocative march from taking place. Similarly, we also call on
International human rights observers and national media to take serious note of this dangerous
escalation and hold the responsible parties accountable.

If the proposed "Chalo Manipur" goes ahead, Kuki Inpi Manipur will hold the Government of India
and the Manipur State Government fully responsible for any resulting violence, loss of life, or destruction of property. The hills are not a battleground for political experiments, and the resilience of the Kuki people should not be mistaken for submission. This is not a march for peace or rehabilitation. It is a march for domination, occupation, and ethnic annihilation—and it must be
stopped.
