Youth Day 2026: A Celebration of Faith, History, and Fellowship
EVERY year on May 17, Thangkhal Baptist Churches (TBC) in Manipur observe Youth Day. This dedicated day serves a profound purpose: to empower, strengthen, and sharpen the young minds of the community through a balanced combination of spiritual fellowship and physical games. It is a deliberate effort to prepare the younger generation to become capable leaders for their future. To truly appreciate the depth of this celebration, one must look back at the history of the Thangkhal people, the pioneers who built the church, and the vibrant fellowship that continues to thrive today, as beautifully demonstrated by the TBC Delhi youth during their recent celebration.
The spiritual journey of the Thangkhal community is a powerful story of perseverance and divine timing. The Zo people first received the gospel in 1910 in Senvawn, southern Manipur, through the ministry of Watkin Roberts (1886-1969), a Welsh missionary based in Aizawl. During the First World War, two Mizo evangelists, Thangchhingpuia(1879-1954) and Vanzika (1884-1952), travelled into the Thangkhal Hills to preach the message of Christ. However, they faced an insurmountable obstacle: the Thangkhal people could not understand the Lusei dialect. Because of this language barrier, the message did not take root, no conversions took place, and the missionaries eventually ceased their work in the area.
The breakthrough came decades later when Evangelist Thawngluan brought the gospel to T. Khajang village on March 7, 1939. Living and ministering among the Thangkhal people from 1939 to 1947, he laid a lasting foundation of faith. Decades of spiritual growth culminated on April 4, 1981, with the establishment of the “Thangkhal Christian Association”. The foundational bedrock for this first association was anchored heavily on the scripture from John 4:24, which declares that God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
Simultaneous with the birth of the association in 1981, the Youth Department was established to nurture the younger generation. The pioneering leaders who stepped up to guide the youth in that inaugural year included Mr. Haukhanpau (M. Tanglian) as Director, Mr. M. Haukhanpau (Ngoiphai) as General Secretary, Mr. Zalianpau (Ngoiphai) as Assistant General Secretary, Miss Nemkhanmang (M. Tanglian) as Treasurer, and Mr. Khuplianpau (M. Tanglian) as Auditor. The spiritual legacy of the community reached another historic milestone through the support of the Bible Society of India (BSI) in Bangalore, allowing the Thangkhal people to read the Word of God in their own heart language. The Thangkhal New Testament, translated by Rev. Ginkhankap, was released in 2010 at the TBC Central Church Tuibuang, followed by the translation and release of the Old Testament by Pastor Thangdoulal in 2023.
Carrying this rich history forward, the youth of today continue to celebrate their heritage with unmatched enthusiasm. On Saturday, May 16, 2026, while youth departments across various villages in Manipur observed the day locally, the Youth Department of TBC Delhi gathered at the Super Sports Park in Vasant Kunj from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. It was a precious afternoon filled with bliss, joy, and refreshing fellowship. The event opened and closed with humble prayers led by local pastor, Pastor Thangdoulal, sandwiching hours of competitive sports and unforgettable moments.
The athletic events brought out a wonderful spirit of friendly competition across all age groups. In the men's target shoot, Mr. Chinsuanlam showcased incredible precision, walking away with the first prize, while the second and third positions remained unclaimed. The women's target shoot saw sharp focus, with Miss Chingdeikim, Miss Ruthi Niangneihoih, and Miss Lhingneihoih securing the first, second, and third prizes respectively. The children also filled the park with energy. In the children's target shoot, Ms. Kimkim took first, Mr. Khupkhup took second, and Ms. Puipui took third. The children's balloon race ended with Mr. Gougou in first place, Mr. Minthang in second, and Mr. Jabez in third. Mr. Gougou proved his speed again in the children's spoon race by winning first place, followed by Ms. Sawmching in second and Ms. Kimkim in third. In the women's spoon race, Mrs. Chingthianmawi bagged the first prize, Mrs. Titing took second, and Miss Naulun finished third.
The team sports provided the most dramatic highlights of the day. The women's football match featured a tough, spirited battle between the married women and the single ladies. Though the married players put forth an incredible effort and fought until the final whistle, the singles ultimately edge them out, winning the match with a close score of 3-2. The men's football match between the married men and the bachelors was an absolute thriller, fought tooth and nail. Goals were scored one after another in a spectacular back-and-forth rhythm, resembling two butterflies flying higher and higher, trading the lead constantly. Towards the end of the match, the bachelors mounted a massive offensive and scored a flurry of goals. However, luck did not favour them; despite scoring an impressive 10 goals, they fell just short of the married men, who secured the victory with a whopping 13 goals. After the matches concluded, the community gathered for group photographs. Though everyone felt physically tired and weak from the intense games, the refreshments served by the youth provided a welcome relief, leaving everyone re-energized and joyful. Looking at the energy, dedication, and history of the Thangkhal youth, there is a profound spiritual calling attached to their lives. In the Bible (NRSV), 1 Timothy 4:12 offers a powerful mandate: “Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”
This scripture serves as a direct encouragement to the youth, who stand as the vital pillars of the church, the society, and the wider community. Just as the early evangelists overcame language barriers and hardships to plant the seeds of faith in the Thangkhal Hills, the youth of today are called to build upon that strong foundation. Young people must look toward the future with clear vision and high expectations. Now is the time to start aiming high, refusing to settle for mediocrity in education, career, or spiritual life. By placing complete trust in God and anchoring your ambitions in God's wisdom, no dream is too grand to achieve. In a world that often compromises on values, let the Thangkhal youthconstantly strive for goodness, integrity, and pure faith. By setting an example in love and conduct, you do not just protect the legacy of the pioneers but also actively shape a brighter, blessed future for the generations to come.

Assam Rifles Rescue Injured in Kamjong Accident
ASSAM Rifles personnel at Shangshak swiftly rescued two seriously injured civilians after a vehicle accident near Gamnoum Village in Kamjong district on May 16, 2026.
