A Lamp to Our Feet and Path

ON Sunday, 11th October 2026, as congregations across the globe gather to observe Pastor Appreciation Day, our community finds itself reflecting on the profound impact of spiritual leadership. In the Christian tradition, the word shepherd carries a deep and sacred meaning. Far more than a mere title, a shepherd is a guardian, a guide, and a selfless protector who walks alongside his flock through every valley and mountain pass. Biblical shepherding is rooted in gentle care, unwavering vigilance, and an enduring commitment to lead souls toward truth and nourishment. To truly embody a shepherd’s heart is to give oneself entirely to the well-being of others, offering quiet strength in moments of doubt and steadfast guidance through every season of life. It is this very spirit of service that defines the devotion of Pastor Thangdoulal, a dedicated servant whose life and tireless labour remind us of the beauty of faith put into action.

Born on 15th September 1982 in a humble farm hut at Suanthang Loubuk in Tuitum Khuangkhai village, Pastor Thangdoulal was the eldest of eight siblings born to Mr Hangsuanpau Suantak and Mrs Chingneilam (Tungnung). From his early childhood, he showed a deep and abiding passion for the Word of God. After passing Class XII in second division, his hunger for spiritual truth led him to earn his Bachelor of Theology (B.Th) from Solid Rock Theological College in Kerala in 2010, followed by a Master of Divinity (M.Div) in 2012 and a Master of Theology (M.Th) in 2014 from Living Hope Theological College in Tamil Nadu. Ordained as a pastor in 2017, he has faithfully balanced his calling with a loving family life alongside his wife, Niangliannem. Together they are blessed with three young daughters: eight-year-old Chingsiandeih in Class 3, four-year-old Lamnuamkim in Junior Activities Class, and two-year-old Chingbiakhoih, who has not yet started school. Through his frequent writings on Biblical themes, stories, and books in the Thangkhal dialect, Pastor Thangdoulal has continuously nourished the spiritual and cultural heritage of his people.

Yet, perhaps his most monumental contribution lies in translating the Old Testament into the Thangkhal dialect, which was released on 17th October 2023. Following the early work of Rev. K. Ginkhankap, who translated the New Testament released on 18th July 2010, Pastor Thangdoulal helped complete a journey that began when the Gospel first reached the Thangkhal community through evangelist Thawngluan in 1939. Today, containing 49,55,488 words and 34,759 vocabulary entries, the Thangkhal Holy Bible sits directly in the hands of believers. Rooted in his favourite scripture, Psalm 119:105, which reminds us that God’s word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path, Pastor Thangdoulal has ensured that future generations will walk in that light using their own mother tongue. As we honour him this Pastor Appreciation Day, we celebrate a leader whose shepherd’s heart has truly illuminated our path. May God bless our beloved Pastor!
