Revival of Indigenous Games Begins in Imphal

Imphal, May 21, 2026 (DIPR): The five-day “Revival of Indigenous Native Games” (RING) 2026 began on Thursday at Mapal Kangjeibung under the joint organisation of the Manipur Upliftment Centre and National Yuva Cooperative Society.
The event aims to celebrate indigenous games and living traditions that reflect the spirit, history and cultural identity of communities across generations, while empowering youths through sports and cultural heritage.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, Naorem Praveen, Commissioner of Youth Affairs and Sports, said Manipur is internationally recognised for its rich legacy of indigenous sports and native games. Referring to traditional sports such as Sagol Kangjei, Khong Kangjei and Yubi Lakpi, he stated that these games are deeply connected to the culture and identity of the people.
He stressed the importance of proper training, institutional support and early exposure for children to preserve and promote indigenous games. He also highlighted the tourism potential of Sagol Kangjei and called for dedicated training spaces and inclusion of native games in educational curricula.

The speakers noted that Thang-Ta, the traditional martial art form of Manipur, is now featured in national school championships. Youths were encouraged to channel their energy through sports and cultural activities, while stressing that such initiatives should be organised annually to safeguard native games and traditions.
Delivering the inaugural address, Pradip Phanjoubam, Senior Journalist and Editor of the Imphal Review of Arts and Politics, emphasised the urgent need to preserve Manipur’s traditional games as an integral part of the state’s sporting and cultural heritage.

“Our indigenous games are deeply connected to our identity and sporting culture. If we fail to preserve and promote them through collective and sustained efforts, there is a real danger that these living traditions may one day survive only in museums,” he remarked.

The programme also highlighted the contributions of pioneers in traditional sports, stating that their leadership plays a vital role in inspiring wider participation and awareness among younger generations.

Nameirakpam Kunjarani Devi, recipient of the Padma Shri, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and Arjuna Award, expressed willingness to share her expertise for youth development, stating that proper guidance could help talented youths build a better future.

Among others present on the dais were Lourembam Bikram Singh and eminent artist Lourembam Bedabati Devi, along with renowned sportspersons.
The celebration features demonstrations of indigenous sports and martial traditions including Thang-Ta (Huyel Langon), Arambai exhibition, Mukna Kangjei, Sagol Kangjei and Kom Archery exhibition.

The later phase of the event will be held at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, where competitions and demonstrations of Thang-Ta, Kang and Mukna will take place simultaneously at the Indoor Stadium and Kangsang. The programme will also include competitions in Yubi Lakpi, Thouri Chingbi, Mukna and Kangjei.

🇮🇳 Major David Manlun: India Salutes a Brave Hero 🕯️

🇮🇳🕯️ Major David Manlun from Churachandpur district of Manipur is remembered across the nation as a fearless officer who made the supreme sacrifice while fighting insurgents near the Myanmar border. ❤️⚔️

His courage, determination, and leadership during one of the most dangerous counter-insurgency operations continue to inspire millions of Indians and stand as a proud example of service to the nation.

According to reports, Major David was serving with the 164 Infantry Battalion TA (NAGA) in Nagaland, where security forces regularly carried out operations against insurgent groups active near the border region. 🌲🚨

In June 2017, intelligence reports suggested the presence of heavily armed militants in the Lappa area of Mon district near the Myanmar border.

The militants were suspected to be linked to extremist organisations operating in the region, prompting security forces to launch a joint mission involving Para Commandos and the 164 Infantry Battalion. 🇮🇳🛡️

The operation was conducted in extremely challenging terrain, nearly 325 kilometers away from Kohima and close to the international border. During the mission, insurgents suddenly opened intense fire on the advancing troops. 💥

⚔️ Major David Manlun, who was leading the team from the front, displayed extraordinary bravery by moving forward and launching a counter-attack against the militants while guiding and motivating his soldiers during the fierce encounter.

While protecting his troops and fighting courageously against the insurgents, Major David was critically hit by enemy fire and attained martyrdom in the line of duty. 🇮🇳💔

Reports also stated that the successful operation led to the recovery of a significant quantity of weapons and ammunition from the militants, highlighting the effectiveness and bravery of the security forces involved.

For his exceptional courage, leadership, unwavering commitment, and supreme sacrifice, Major David Manlun was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award. 🏅✨

His sacrifice remains a reminder of the bravery and dedication shown daily by India’s armed forces in protecting peace and national security.

India salutes this brave hero with pride, respect, and gratitude. 🙏🇮🇳

India Aims for Insurgency-Free Northeast by 2029 Deadline

THE Indian government has set its sights on a significant milestone: making the Northeast insurgency-free by 2029. After seeing real progress in reducing Maoist violence in other parts of the country, the focus has now shifted to the beautiful but often troubled states like Manipur, Assam, and Nagaland. It is a bold move that involves moving elite security forces, such as the specialized CoBRA units, into these areas once their current duties elsewhere are finished. This isn’t just about moving soldiers around; it’s a clear signal that the authorities are ready to wrap up decades of unrest and bring a lasting sense of security to the region.
Manipur is right at the heart of this new plan, and for good reason. Officials have made it the priority because it remains the most affected state, accounting for a staggering 77% of all insurgency cases in the Northeast in 2024. The numbers tell a tough story: out of the 16 active insurgent groups in the entire region, Manipur alone is home to eight of them. In comparison, Assam has three, while Meghalaya and Tripura have two each, and Nagaland has one. With 226 insurgency-related cases reported in Manipur last year - the highest in the region - the government is sending in bulletproof vehicles and extra kit to ensure the safety of both the public and the officers on the ground.
What makes this strategy interesting is that it doesn’t just look at the fighting. There is a deep understanding now that insurgency is often kept alive by dirty money, specifically from the drug trade. By bringing in the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to work alongside the police, the government is trying to cut off the oxygen that keeps these armed groups going. It’s a bit like fixing a leaky tap; you can’t just keep mopping the floor, you have to find the source of the water. By hitting the smuggling networks that fund these groups, they hope to make it impossible for them to continue their operations.
As we look toward 2029, the goal is about more than just ending conflict; it’s about opening the door for the Northeast to finally thrive. When people feel safe, businesses grow, schools flourish, and tourism can take off. This five-year deadline is ambitious, but it provides a clear roadmap for a region that has waited a long time for stability. If this plan succeeds, the Northeast will no longer be seen through the lens of troubled borders, but rather as a vibrant, peaceful gateway to the rest of Asia.
Setting a deadline like 2029 is a double-edged sword. While it shows strong political will, true peace in the Northeast requires more than just moving troops and arresting smugglers. The real victory will come when the local communities feel that their voices are heard and their futures are secure. Security forces can clear the path, but lasting peace is built on trust, development, and the healing of old wounds. If the government can balance its tough security measures with genuine empathy and local investment, 2029 might truly mark the beginning of a golden era for the region.

The blast struck a civilian house at around 1:00 a.m., resulting in the death of two children and leaving their mother critically injured.)
