Exposing Atrocities Against Kuki-Zo Women

NEW DELHI, MARCH 8, 2024 --- In the initial wave of violence that swept through Manipur beginning on May 3, 2023, a shocking number of 20 women were brutally killed in the most gruesome manner. This barbaric act marked a dire escalation in the turmoil and set the stage for the extensive human rights violations that followed.

Since that time, Manipur has continued to witness extreme human rights violations, horrendous murders, and a total breakdown of law and order. The Kuki-Zo tribal community living in the state’s capital, Imphal, and its periphery, have been forced to flee their homes after being hunted down in the most barbaric manner in the lanes of Imphal valley, Manipur. The Kuki-Zo tribals have been stripped of their fundamental right to life, and to date, even after numerous protests and calls for justice, a fair solution seems to be far away. The Kuki-Zo tribal community has fallen victim to the Meitei majoritarian propaganda, which has been successfully executed under the aegis of the Meitei-centric state government, headed by Chief Minister Shri N. Biren Singh. The distortion of historical facts, the dissemination of false reports by Meitei media houses, and the continuous vilification of the Kukis on various social media platforms have been the means employed by the Meiteis to suppress the voices of the Kuki-Zo tribals.

Women and children have not been spared either. A deeply disturbing video of two Kuki-Zo tribal women being paraded naked by a Meitei mob went viral on July 19, 2023, and shocked the world. This incident is only the tip of the iceberg in the utterly inhuman torture the Kuki-Zo tribal women have been subjected to. There are numerous testimonies of Kuki-Zo tribal women being raped, molested, and killed by Meitei mobs supported by Arambai Tenggols. Notably, the involvement of the Meira Paibis, who are supposedly the torchbearers of society and call themselves the guardians of civil society, in assaulting Kuki-Zo tribal women is profoundly disturbing. Video evidence shows a Kuki-Zo tribal woman being mobbed by the Meiteis while the Meira Paibis (Meitei mothers) are heard instigating the male youths to ‘take away her dignity,’ a euphemism for inciting molestation and rape. A woman and her son were burnt alive in an ambulance. A mentally challenged elderly woman was shot dead in broad daylight. A teenage girl was kidnapped and threatened by Meitei kidnappers that they would ‘chop her to pieces.’ Medical reports suggest that she was raped. In stark contrast to the instigation seen in Imphal, the compassion demonstrated by Kuki-Zo women in Churachandpur reflect a profound sense of humanity. Kuki-Zo women in Churachandpur formed a human barrier to protect the Meitei people amidst the chaos, preventing the mob from inflicting harm while the evacuations took place. This act of defense occurred despite the distressing events unfolding in Imphal, where reports have surfaced of Meitei women allegedly encouraging violence against Kuki women.

Calls for justice have fallen on deaf ears, and the survivors are left to cope with the haunting trauma on their own, while the perpetrators freely roam around, facing no social or judicial consequences for their murderous acts.

FEW OF THE NUMEROUS ATROCITIES AGAINST KUKI-ZO WOMEN RAPE:

1.    On May 5, 2023 Ms. Olivia and Ms. Florence, who were in their 20s, were gagged, dragged inside a closed room, where they were tortured, molested, and raped to death. A video of the incident shows local Meitei women, also known as the Meira Paibis, handing over the two women to the men and urging them to assault the women. This heinous act took place in Konung Mamang, Imphal, a location less than a kilometre from the bungalow of Manipur's Chief Minister, Biren Singh. Had there been action taken, those two young women, who suffered torture and rape, and were brutally mutilated, could have been saved.

2.    On May 15, 2023 Ms. Kim, an 18-year-old girl, was abducted and taken to Wangkhei, then to Langol, where the kidnappers physically assaulted her and threatened to rape and chop her to pieces. She had a narrow escape and survived. Her medical reports indicate that she had been raped.

MURDER:

On May 4, 2023, Mrs. Veinem Chongloi, who was over 80 years old, blind, sick, and bedridden, was strangled by the Meiteis. Her two daughters, Ms. Helam and Ms. Hekim, who had been living with their aged mother in Uripok, Imphal since childhood, were also shot and killed in their courtyard. Having lived among the Meiteis since childhood, they had believed that their neighbors would not harm them.

MUTILATION:

On May 6, 2023 Mrs. Thiandam Vaiphei, 45 years old, was butchered and burned to death. It was found that her head had been hit and her throat slit before her gruesome death.

CRUEL TREATMENT AND TORTURE:

1.    Ms. Hoi, 21, Mrs. Lam 42, and Mrs. Ting, 52, were stripped of their clothes and paraded naked. Ms. Hoi was brutally gang-raped.

2.    Ms. Agnes Nei, 22, and her friend were attacked by a Meitei mob who physically assaulted them. They were punched until their teeth fell out, kicked until they were unconscious, and left to die. Agnes and her friend (name not mentioned), are students at the Nightingale Nursing Institute in Porompat, Imphal. Around 4 p.m. on May 4, Meitei mobs attacked Agnes and her friend with sticks, punched them in the head and face until their teeth fell out, kicked them in the stomach and back until they were unconscious, and left them to die. Miraculously, they regained consciousness in the hospital and managed to reach Lamka after a few days.

 DISCRIMINATION:

1.    On July 6, 2023 Mrs. Donngaihching Hangzo, 63 years old, a mentally challenged elderly woman, was shot dead in broad daylight. Later, disturbing images of her corpse lying on the road were circulated by Meitei-controlled media houses, falsely labeling her as a ‘suicide bomber’.

2.    On 15 July 2023, Mrs. Marim Lucy, a Maring Naga woman, was murdered by Meitei miscreants. The Imphal police were on high alert, and within 24 hours, 12 suspects were arrested. This gruesome murder was met with condemnations from various Meitei Civil Society Organisations and assurances of timely compensation for the bereaved family. The state government promised to deliver justice for Mrs. Marim Lucy. In contrast, the murderers of Mrs. Donngaihching Hangzo, Mrs. Veinem Chongloi, her daughters, and the numerous victims from the Kuki-Zo community are still roaming freely in the Imphal  Valley, and no action has been taken against them.

DEPRIVATION:

Mrs. Lamneichong Khongsai, 24 years old, who was pregnant, died due to childbirth complications because of the lack of medical facilities in the relief camp where she was taking refuge.

EDUCATIONAL DISCRIMINATION:

1.    Students of Manipur University were hunted down within the university campus by Meitei mobs who entered women’s hostel rooms and specifically searched for Kuki students. Although they escaped alive, the students lost their educational documents, research works, and project findings, which are now reduced to ashes.

2.    Medical students of JNIMS and RIMS escaped near-death experiences and are unable to continue their classes. They are still pleading for an alternative arrangement since returning to their institutions is as good as a death sentence.

3.    Kuki-Zo students enrolled in colleges under Manipur University (MU), Dhanamanjuri University (DMU), law colleges, and other educational institutions in Imphal have had their exam results tampered with by the authorities. Enrollment in other universities has also proved difficult as their previous colleges and universities in Imphal have refused to issue their migration certificates.

4.    Kuki-Zo UPSC and SSC aspirants have to undertake long journeys to neighboring states of Nagaland and Mizoram to take exams since their state’s capital, Imphal, has become a Valley of Death for them. Concerned organizations have been requesting alternative arrangements by adding exam centers in Kuki-Zo districts. There has been no positive response from the concerned authorities so far.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”. The theme centers on the purpose of accelerating progress by investing in women and aims to inspire people to recognize the value of including women. However, Kuki-Zo women have been on the receiving end of inhuman torture, vilification, and have been stripped of their fundamental right to live with dignity. For the past ten months, they have been victims of unfathomable violence, their voices silenced and their cries for help ignored. For Kuki-Zo women, inclusion in the world’s lofty claims of its fight for justice, equality, and freedom is nothing more than a myth. While the dead bodies are decaying and the survivors struggle to heal from their traumatic experiences, the murderers and rapists roam about freely, eluding the ‘long arms of the law’.

An Open Letter to United Naga Council, Manipur

Dear UNITED NAGA COUNCIL, Manipur

This is not an official rejoinder to your press release dated 2nd February 2024, but treat it as a heart felt response from a Kuki-Zo volunteer. You have given us a warning citing some of the issues that you assert have hurt you. Now, lets look at the origin of this conflict. It started with Meiteis demanding ST status which we tribals (both Naga and Kuki-Zo) were against it since it would put us at a great disadvantage vis-a-vis Meiteis. So, after deliberations, our apex tribal student’s body ATSUM called for a mass protest. While that protest happened in all hill areas, problems started in Lamka after volunteers who had returned from the town to the periphery villages were assaulted by the Meiteis. One thing led to another and by evening, Meiteis selectively targeted Kuki-Zo in Imphal and the savagery was there for all to see. Given the fact that we were all trying to fight together for tribal rights, it was logical that Manipur Nagas should have stood by our side and sent strong messages against Meiteis if they would escalate the voilence. But what did you all do except for your stoic silence. Its like two brothers going to fight together against a vicious neigbour but one suddenly changing stance and deciding to be ‘neutral’ when the neighbour reacted violently. If there ever was one community that can feel grieved against your betrayal, it is the Kuki Zo.

Secondly, the case of the burning of a Liangmai house in Leimakhong is blown out of proportion. Please remember that the said house caught fire during retaliatory burning of Meitei houses. Moreover, since the occupants were Meiteis, no body had the time to research the owner of the house at the heat of the moment. We were threatened to pay Rs. 20 Lakhs which was not only a heavy sum at a time such as this and that too for a house which didn’t deserve that high amount. But we complied not wanting to grieve the family further. Our Liangmai brothers should have realised that we were fighting for our common future instead of trying to act vengeful.

Thirdly, with regard to the harassing of a Naga driver, the act of the Kuki underground was condemnable. Yet, it is a given that all insurgent groups collect taxes in their respective regions and this menace is as prevalent in Kuki areas as it is in Naga areas. The blank firing case is another unfortunate episode for which actions of such reckless jackasses need no defending. However, four of our Kuki civilians were butchered deep inside Ukhrul district. Not to forget the burning of villages within Ukhrul district. The Meiteis cannot reach there without crossing many Tangkhul areas, and a certain Manipur Naga Revolutionary Front was also involved in the Killing. Did we threaten any Naga living nearby because of that? Is the Killing of Kukis justified?

What about the safe passages that Meitei insurgents from Burma are getting via Ukhrul? Do you all understand that we also can get hurt? That too for fighting alone for something we started together? Or were we lured to a trap? We know that Meiteis are trying their best to draw you all in the conflict and are waiting for us to make mistakes. Therefore, we didn’t even react to the killing of Kukis in Ukhul even though it has hurt us. Though much grieved, we also remember the Naga individuals who gave us shelter in Imphal on those unforgettable nights, and those who assisted us tremendously by tending to our injured; those contributing sacricial reliefs especially from Senapati and Tamenglong districts. We also can’t forget the help that Nagaland Nagas rendered to us. We shall remember them. Yet, at such difficult times, a warning letter from UNC is very unwarranted.

In the initial days of the war, our leaders approached you to join hands together. Your response was that you will get back to us but that day never came. You all have been fighting for Greater Nagalim which was to carve out portions of Manipur. Looking at your attitude in this war, those high sounding shibboleths of the Naga national workers from the South seem all an eye wash. If claimants to hill districts is a concern, tribal Christians can surely chalk out such issues in a give-and-take manner since we live in contiguous areas. The British opened sub-divisions after our surrender in the Kuki Uprising 1917-19, and the headquarters were placed in your villages for fear of disturbance if placed in Kuki villages. That doesn’t mean that all hill areas belong to you. We wouldn’t have fought the British for almost 3 years if we were not defending our land, and as much as it belongs to you, it also belongs to us. Each village was an independent entity and didn’t belong to any particular tribe.

You know well that the greatest hindrance to your political dream is the Meiteis with their avowed pledge to defend Manipur’s territorial integrity. Today, if our churches can be burnt, one day, yours can be burnt too. Your silence and ‘neutrality’ in this conflict shows that you are preferring short term benefit for the cost of perpetual subjugation. Some of the influential ones among you even seem to be consigning themselves to a future with their Meitei ‘brothers’.

Meitei have 40 MLAs in an Assembly of 60; they control all the state machineries. Our foolish leaders gave them a foothold in Lamka, Kangpokpi and Moreh. Now, via the ST status, they want access to all our land. With the kind of financial clout they have, in few years they will finish buying all our land, including ‘Naga Hills’ in Manipur. There will be no reservation in the state and they will eat up all tribal jobs in the centre. Infact, Kuki-Zo from Lamka might still be able to compete with Meiteis but what about us Kuki-Zo and Nagas from Kangpokpi, Chandel, Tamenglong, Tengnoupal, Ukhrul? Do we stand a chance? What then explains such cloudy vision from your leadership? Has the safety of your homes in Imphal become the most important political vison?

As for us, we are done living under the domination and subjugation of the Meiteis. We don't know whether we will win or lose, but atleast our grand childrens will be proud that we fought with all our might with our heads held high instead of bowing to a barbaric and savage civilisation. They might have all the state machineries but we have the will, a desire to be free. We leave it to you to choose your path but as for us, we will never again barter our dignity with pigs and compensations! Lastly, please remember that though we are fighting alone, we are still fighting on our(Naga and Kuki-Zo) behalf. Our victory will be your victory and our loss will be your loss. If we lose, know that you are the next target of the Meiteis. The least you can do is to atleast give us moral support.

Yours sincerely,

David Kuki,
A Kuki Village Volunteer

We are Human Beings: COTU

Press Communique | March 7, 2024

COTU is appalled by the most communal Chief Minister of all Indian states, N. Biren Singh, for his most recent abusive remarks directed at the Kuki-Zo group.

During his address, he talked about how the Meitei people had been driven out of Moreh, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur by monkeys. It's ridiculous that he would disrespect the Kuki-Zo people by calling them monkeys. Any rational citizen would detest such immaturity and imbecility in a mature individual such as the communal chief minister, Biren Singh. It is also a blatant violation of human rights.  His words and actions are equally unsound and absurd, which is unbecoming of the head of the state. At this rate, it portends some major events where the state will soon crumble under his authoritarian rule.

Why does the chief minister of Manipur openly declare that Manipur is the homeland of the Meitei people alone? If he had brought up the valley, which spans 700 square miles, that would have been acceptable to some degree. Given that the Kukis have played active roles in the nation-building process, his genocidal crusade against the minority Kuki-Zo tribals under the pretext of "illegal immigrants" is illogical and not justified.

As per Hindu faith and mythology, monkeys have an especially significant role where they are worshipped as avatars of Hanuman, the mighty ape that aided Ram in his fight against evil. Biren is unaware that Sita's rescue from Raavan was made possible in large part by the monkeys acting on Ram's orders. Biren's callous treatment of monkeys revered by the Hindus belies his professed devotion to Hinduism, as demonstrated once more.

We also request the other Tribal Community of Manipur to be more cautious on the diabol mentality of the Majority Community Meitei for tarnishing their images of their Community.

Under Biren Singh's anarchy, Manipur has been in turmoil, and peace and harmony are unattainable goals. While the rest of the world looks on in silence, such communal CM is using its ultimate authority to obliterate the Kuki-Zo people. The issue of when the Indian government would step in and put things right remains unanswered to this day. COTU questions why the Center has not exercised suo moto cognizance over the sufferings of the Kuki-Zo people and provided justice, as the Indian Constitution declares.

First Indian woman BD Graduate, Khrieleno Terhüjah, passes away at 90

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Khrieleno Terhüjah, one of the most esteemed alumni of United Theological College (UTC), Bengaluru.

A visionary ahead of her time, Khrieleno was the first female student at UTC, enrolling in the Bachelor of Divinity (BD) programme from 1961 to 1965. Despite UTC’s status as the premier theological college in India, the institution had no facilities for female students, as theological education was then exclusively male. Undeterred, Khrieleno remained steadfast in her goal. In support, Prof. Dr. J.R. Chandran offered her a small storeroom, which served as both her room and kitchen.

From this humble corner at UTC, Khrieleno Terhüjah made history in 1966, becoming the first Indian woman to complete the BD programme.

Since that milestone, Khrieleno has been an enduring inspiration, paving the way for countless Indian women to engage in and contribute to theological education across India and beyond.

Khrieleno Terhüja passed away at the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) in Dimapur, Nagaland on the night of March 5th after a prolonged illness.

Born on May 21, 1933, Khrieleno Terhüja was married to the late Rüüngukho Terhuja and is survived by three sons and ten grandchildren.

Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this time of loss. May they find peace, comfort, and love in their memories of her, and may her soul rest in eternal peace.
