13 Jiribam-Tribal Chiefs Seek Merger with Pherzawl District

DECLARATION

The undersigned Scheduled Tribes (ST) of the thirteen tribal village chiefs of Jiribam District, Manipur, unanimously declare the consent of our people and ourselves that we desire to be amalgamated to Pherzawl District, Manipur, and come under the full jurisdiction of Pherzawl District with immediate effect.

Since time immemorial, our areas have been part and parcel of the existing Pherzawl District and we do not want to be administered under Jiribam District.

The sketch map highlighting the tribal areas to be included within Pherzawl District is attached.

It is submitted that the Government may please take necessary action at the earliest to implement our request.

PRESS COMMUNIQUE

The All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM), strongly disagree and records its most vehement and categorical repudiation of the recent pronouncement by the Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) mandating the compulsory inscription of vehicle registration numbers in Meetei Mayek script across the State.

This directive is an egregious imposition — illogical in reasoning, constitutionally infirm in substance, and democratically indefensible in principle. It constitutes not cultural renaissance but coercive particularism. In a constitutional polity governed by the supremacy of law, no organisation may arrogate unto itself the authority to enforce the linguistic emblem of one community upon the entirety of a plural and heterogeneous society.

Manipur is an intricate civilisational mosaic, inhabited by numerous indigenous communities, each endowed with its own venerable linguistic heritage and cultural sovereignty. The imposition of a singular script upon all communities is a direct affront to identity, dignity, and the constitutional guarantees safeguarding equality and cultural freedom. Such unilateral insistence subverts the federal spirit and corrodes the delicate equilibrium upon which democratic coexistence rests.

The State remains in a condition of acute fragility, having endured manifold unwanted and grievous incidents rooted in perceptions of cultural domination. To resurrect and rigidly advance this contentious mandate at so precarious a juncture is profoundly injudicious. It portends misunderstanding, exacerbates communal fissures, and imperils the already fragile peace process amidst prevailing turmoil.

ANSAM unequivocally declares that it shall not acquiesce to any illogical or unconstitutional demand emanating from any organisation or community that infringes upon the inalienable rights and collective identity of the Nagas and the tribal populace as a whole. Cultural affirmation must never metastasise into hegemonic imposition. Should any deleterious or dire consequences arise from this obdurate insistence, MEELAL must bear the moral and civic responsibility for the ramifications of its unilateral action.

The Association therefore urges the Government of Manipur, in the gravest possible terms, to intervene forthwith, restrain such unconstitutional impositions, and uphold the constitutional covenant of justice, plurality, and coequal citizenship before the situation deteriorates further.

KSO Announces Districtwide 24-Hour Mourning for MLA Valte

Lamka, Feb 23, 2026: The Kuki Students' Organisation Churachandpur (KSO), Churachandpur District, has announced a 24-hour districtwide mourning in honour of its beloved elected representative, Vungzagin Valte, MLA of 56-Thanlon Assembly Constituency. The mourning will begin at 6:00 AM on February 24, 2026, as his mortal remains are expected to reach the district.

In a press release issued on February 23, 2026, the organisation paid its highest tribute to the late leader. It described him as a committed public servant and a strong voice for justice, dignity and democratic values. The statement also recalled that he was a victim of the ethnic violence that broke out on May 4, 2023, and said his sacrifice remains a painful reminder of the suffering faced by the people.

During the 24-hour mourning period, all business establishments, educational institutions and offices have been requested to remain closed as a mark of respect. The public has also been urged to participate in receiving the mortal remains when they arrive in the district.

However, exemption has been granted to students appearing for Board, Council and other examinations, who must carry their admit cards. All emergency services will also remain exempted from the closure.

ZSF Declares 24-Hour Closure in Honour of MLA Valte Rites

Lamka, Feb 23, 2026: The Zomi Students' Federation (ZSF), General Headquarters, has declared a 24-hour closure of all business establishments, educational institutions and offices, both public and private, on February 24, 2026, starting from 6:00 AM. The decision was taken as per the direction of the Zomi Council following the demise of MLA Vungzagin Valte of 56-Thanlon Assembly Constituency.

In its press release dated February 23, 2026, the Federation appealed to the public to cooperate in observing the closure. It also requested people to take part in receiving the mortal remains, which are expected to arrive in Lamka at around 12:00 noon.

Furthermore, the Federation has urged residents to hoist black flags in front of their homes as a mark of homage to the departed leader. The statement prayed that the Almighty may be with the bereaved family and loved ones.

Exemption from the closure has been granted to students appearing for Board and Council examinations, who are required to carry their admit cards. All essential services will remain exempted.

ITLF Demands Separate Administration After MLA’s Death

Lamka, Feb 23, 2026: The Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) has expressed profound grief over the demise of Vungzagin Valte, MLA of 56-Thanlon Assembly Constituency, and renewed its demand for a Separate Administration in the form of a Union Territory with legislature for the Kuki-Zo people.

In a press release issued on February 23, 2026, the Forum stated that Pu Vungzagin Valte succumbed to the brutal injuries he sustained on May 4, 2023. On that day, after meeting the then Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, he was allegedly assaulted by a mob while seeking safe passage for his people. The ITLF said he was left to die on the roadside, while his driver, Pu Thanghoulal Zou, was killed on the spot. After nearly three years of suffering, the MLA breathed his last on February 21, 2026.

The Forum described his death as a painful testimony to the atrocities endured by the Kuki-Zo community. It stated that the killing of the MLA and the loss of over 200 Kuki-Zo lives reflect systematic violence, displacement and destruction. According to the statement, villages were burnt, homes and churches destroyed, and innocent civilians forced to flee from areas where they had lived for generations. It also expressed concern that no arrests have been made so far in connection with the attack on the MLA.

Citing continued insecurity, the ITLF reiterated that the demand for a Separate Administration is not a political ambition but a matter of survival, dignity and constitutional rights. It appealed to the Government of India to initiate an immediate and honourable political settlement ensuring safety, justice and self-administration for the Kuki-Zo people.

The Forum further informed that Pu Vungzagin Valte will be laid to rest on February 24, 2026. It urged the public to cooperate with the funeral arrangements and maintain peace and solemnity during the proceedings.

ZPCC Mourns the Passing of Pu Vungzagin Valte

The Zomi Political Coordination Council (ZPCC) expresses its profound sorrow on the passing of Pu Vungzagin Valte, Hon'ble MLA of the 56–Thanlon Assembly Constituency.

A respected leader and devoted public servant, Pu Valte dedicated his life to the welfare, dignity, and identity of his people. His persistent advocacy led to the recognition of Zomi Nam Ni (Zomi National Day) as a Restricted Holiday in Manipur — a lasting affirmation of Zomi cultural identity.

On 4 May 2023, he was violently attacked by armed militia during unrest in Imphal. The severe injuries he sustained led to prolonged suffering over nearly three years, which ultimately resulted in his passing. Even through hardship, he remained steadfast in his commitment to his people while awaiting justice.

His life of service, integrity, and resilience will be remembered with honor.

ZPCC extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, constituents, and all who mourn his loss.

May his noble soul rest in eternal peace.
