Kuki-Zo Students Protest Against MLA Involvement in New Manipur Government

NEW DELHI – The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) Delhi & NCR staged a demonstration at Jantar Mantar today, 7 February, to register their fierce opposition to the participation of Kuki-Zo legislators in the newly formed Manipur state government.

Protesting under the specific banner "Protest Against Kuki-Zo MLA(s) Involvement in Manipur Popular Government Formation," the student body argued that any participation in the Imphal-based administration betrays the community's struggle. In a strongly worded press statement titled "Justice First, Not Symbolism – Kuki-Zo Dignity Before Government Formation," the KSO declared the new "popular government" illegitimate in the eyes of those still living under displacement and trauma.

A Political Rupture

The KSO clarified that the Kuki-Zo people no longer consider themselves part of Manipur’s political or administrative framework. They described the violence inflicted since May 2023 as an "irreversible political rupture," making continued coexistence under the current state structure untenable.

"The crisis is not about accommodation within Manipur," the statement read, "but about a breakdown that has made continued coexistence under the same state structure untenable." The organisation slammed the projection of peace and stability as a misrepresentation of the lived reality of the people.

The Humanitarian Cost

To underscore their rejection of "symbolic representation," the KSO highlighted the staggering humanitarian toll the community has endured since 3 May 2023:

226 Kuki-Zo lives lost.

Over 200 villages burned and 7,000 houses destroyed.

360+ churches and synagogues destroyed.

41,425 individuals currently displaced.

Demand for Justice

The KSO maintained that peace cannot be "manufactured" through political declarations or administrative gestures while root causes remain unaddressed. The organisation emphasised that the voices of ordinary Kuki-Zo people—those who have lost homes and family members—must take precedence over political appointments. The protesters called for accountability and a permanent political solution that acknowledges the total collapse of the relationship between the community and the State of Manipur.

Taxi Drivers Protest at Jantar Mantar: Key Demands

On February 7, 2026, thousands of app-based transport workers from over 20 states gathered at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi for a "Delhi Chalo" protest. Zomi Council Rejects Allegations Against Zomi MLAs in Manipur Govt

Lamka, Feb 6, 2026: The Zomi Council has strongly rejected allegations branding three Zomi/Kuki/Hmar MLAs as "traitors" following the formation of the new popular government in Manipur.

In a press statement issued by Mary Jones Vung, Secretary, Information and Publicity, Zomi Council Headquarters, Lamka. on Thursday, the Zomi Council said the allegations made by certain sections of society were unethical and uncalled for. 

The council clarified that all 10 MLAs belonging to the Zomi, Kuki and Hmar communities are equally responsible and accountable for the formation of the popular government in the state.

The statement further said that the two Zomi MLAs residing within the Zomi area will be dealt with exclusively by the Zomi community. It warned that no outsider should attempt to interfere in their personal lives or property.

The Zomi Council also cautioned that any defaulter would bear consequences at their own risk, stating that the council would not be held responsible for such actions.

Meanwhile, the council appealed to the Central Government to expedite political talks for an immediate political solution to the ongoing crisis in Manipur.

The Zomi Council also appreciated the strict vigilance exercised by the police, security forces and village volunteers in maintaining peace in the communities.

Open Letter to Thadou Inpi Sadar Hills

We, the concerned citizens and members of the Kuki community, urge you to refrain from misusing the Thadou clan name as a tribe name. This error, which originated from the 1956 Manipur tribe modification, necessitates immediate rectification.

The use of a clan name as a tribe name is causing confusion and disrupting the unity within our community. We respectfully request that you desist from involving clan names in political and tribal matters.

Let us foster unity and solidarity among our clans, including Guite, Haokip, Lhungdim, Misao, Changsan, Thadou, Kilong, Mate, Kipgen, and others, while respecting the distinct identities of clans and tribes. It is imperative that we collaboratively rectify this mistake and progress with a unified voice.

We must not allow this issue to create divisions among us. It is crucial that we prioritize the interests of our community and strive towards a stronger, more united society.

Churachandpur: Kuki Community Protests Against MLAs' Govt Participation

Songpi, Feb 6, 2026: Thousands of people from the Kuki community rallied in Churachandpur, to protest against the participation of Kuki MLAs in the formation of the Manipur government. The protesters, organised by prominent women organisations, demanded that the MLAs step back from their positions.

The rally saw hundreds of people taking to the streets, shouting slogans and burning effigies of the three Kuki MLAs who participated in the government formation. The protesters were angry that the MLAs had ignored the appeal of Kuki organisations to not join the government without a written commitment to their demand for a Union Territory comprising Kuki-dominated areas.

The Kuki organisations had been seeking a separate administration to end the Meitei-Kuki conflict, but the MLAs went ahead with joining the government. The protesters saw this as a betrayal of their trust and an attempt to undermine their struggle for self-determination.

The Kuki Council the apex body condemned the decision of the MLAs to join the government, saying it was in complete disregard of public sentiment and the collective resolutions of the community. The Kuki Council also announced a "social boycott" against the five Kuki BJP MLAs who took part in the meeting in New Delhi.

The protest turned violent on Thursday evening, with some protesters pelting stones at security forces and burning tyres to block roads. Additional forces had to be deployed to restore order. The Kuki Council alleged that the security forces had stopped the protesters from enforcing a shutdown, leading to the violence.

The Kuki organisations have made it clear that they will not back down from their demand for a separate administration. The rally was a show of their collective strength and determination to fight for their rights, despite the government's attempts to divide and manipulate them.
