FIFA World Cup - A Brief Introduction

The FIFA World Cup is the biggest international football tournament in the world. It is organised by FIFA every four years, bringing together the best men's national teams. Millions of fans follow the tournament, making it one of the world's most watched sporting events.

FIFA, which stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association, is the world governing body of football. It was founded on 21 May 1904 in Paris, France, with the aim of promoting and organising international football.

Seven countries became the founding members of FIFA. These were France, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain (represented by Madrid FC), Sweden, and Switzerland. Over the years, FIFA has grown into the largest football organisation in the world.

Today, FIFA's headquarters are located in Zurich, Switzerland, from where it manages and oversees international football competitions, including the FIFA World Cup.

To manage football more effectively, FIFA divides its 211 member associations into six continental confederations. These are the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for Asia, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for Africa, the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) for North, Central America and the Caribbean, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) for South America, the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) for Oceania, and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for Europe.

A country or territory can become a FIFA member only through its national football association. The association must organise and govern football in its country, become a member of its continental confederation, meet FIFA's statutes and regulations, and finally be approved by a vote at the FIFA Congress.

With 211 member associations, FIFA is now the largest international sports federation in the world. In fact, it has more members than the United Nations, which has 193 member states.

Pulse Polio Programme to Begin in Churachandpur Tomorrow

Lamka, June 27, 2026(DIO): The District Health Society, in collaboration with the District Family Welfare Officer, will launch the National Immunization Day (NID), Pulse Polio Programme tomorrow, June 28, 2026, at 7:00 a.m. at the District Hospital, Churachandpur. The inaugural programme will be officiated by the Chief Medical Officer, marking the start of a threeday campaign across the district.

On the first day, booth activities will be held at 321 vaccination booths set up in easily accessible locations throughout Churachandpur. These booths, supervised by 70 supervisors, will administer polio drops to children up to five years of age, including newborns.

The booth activity will be followed by housetohouse vaccination drives on June 29 and 30, 2026, ensuring coverage of all eligible children. The district administration has set a target of vaccinating 27,190 children during the campaign.

Officials have urged parents and guardians to bring their children to the nearest booth centre to avail themselves of the vaccination. The initiative is part of the Government of India’s annual effort to maintain the country’s poliofree status, achieved in 2014 when India was certified poliofree by the World Health Organization.

The last case of polio in India was reported in 2011, though neighbouring countries Pakistan and Afghanistan continue to report cases.

The Pulse Polio Programme, recommended by the Indian Expert Advisory Group (IEAG) on Polio, remains a critical measure to safeguard children and prevent any resurgence of the disease.
