Gone Too Soon: Mourning the Loss of U Paunou (K.Zou)

It breaks my heart to write these words…
On April 8, 2023, at ILBS (Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences), Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, we lost our beloved Mr. Milun Khamchinpau Zou @ K. Zou, a bold and compassionate voice for the Northeast community in the capital. He was also fondly called “Paunou.”

After battling illness for some time, he quietly breathed his last at the age of 56 (just 13 days short of his 57th birthday), surrounded by his loving wife, daughter, and son. They were with him in his final moments, just as he had always been with others throughout his life: present, dependable, and deeply devoted.

I was far from the hospital when the news reached me. Shocked and heavy with sorrow, I rushed to AIIMS, where his body was being embalmed. When I saw his body lying there, still and cold, something inside me broke. From there, I followed his grieving family to the Zomi Christian Fellowship, Sansad Marg, where his final farewell was held. The room was filled with people—some weeping silently, others with eyes closed in prayer—all united in a moment of immense loss. I could only shed tears

I first met Pu K. Zou in May 2001, during my first visit to Delhi. I was young, new to the city, and unsure of my place in it. But he welcomed me with such warmth and generosity that it didn’t feel like a first meeting at all. He was pursuing his law degree at Delhi University at the time, and despite the demands of leadership as president of the All India Tribal Students’ Association (AITSA), he took time to sit down with me. I still remember that afternoon clearly, the way he invited me into his home, offered me a meal, and treated me like family. That quiet, generous gesture is fresh in my mind now.

On the day he passed, that memory came rushing back, clear, bright, and alive. In the midst of the mourning, it was as if that moment from two decades ago returned to comfort me, to remind me of who he was, not just in public, but in the quiet, unseen moments too. That day, I felt a hollow in my heart, as if I had been left alone. In the past, we had walked and talked together, sharing moments and stories. Those days are now only memories, distant, treasured, and gone.
A young K. Zou in his early days in Delhi.
K. Zou, who landed in New Delhi in 1987, was more than just a lawyer — he was a fighter for justiceA proud Delhi University graduate with both an MA (Philosophy) and an LLB, he didn’t just chase personal success; he opened doors for others, especially tribal students from the Northeast who often found themselves isolated, misunderstood, or mistreated in the capital. He had once been a fierce student leader, and that fire never dimmed. He carried that same passion into every cause he took up.
In one of our many conversations, he once gave me advice that still echoes in my mind: “Focus on one thing. Don’t be like Jack, wandering aimlessly, and don’t waste your golden years on endless social activities.”

I smiled and nodded then, not fully grasping the depth of what he meant. But in the days following his passing, those words returned to me with weight and clarity. His voice, his firmness, his insight, they now feel like a guiding force.

There was a moment I will never forget. He looked at me with warmth and said, “Your dad is my Sunday School teacher. He was kind and lovable.”
It meant so much to hear that. In that simple sentence, I felt a deep thread of connection between generations, a quiet acknowledgment that kindness, once given, is never lost.

His heart beat for the forgotten, for those stuck in prisons abroad, those without money or power, those no one else wanted to fight for. He worked tirelessly to bring home several Manipuri tribals who had been imprisoned in Myanmar and Malaysia. I had the privilege of working closely with him on some of those cases. We prepared deportation documents together, called up the embassies at our own expense, drafted press notes, and visited some well-known Members of Parliament and top officials to raise our voice for those who had none.

One of our most meaningful collaborations was preparing his Educational Handbook for Northeast Students. He asked me to help as a copy editor, a small role, but one that I treasure. That handbook wasn’t just a book; it was his way of lighting a path for the next generation.

Education, advocacy, compassion -- he moved through these with ease, never seeking applause, only impact. He believed deeply in the power of knowledge and the importance of standing up, even when it was hard, even when it was lonely.

His body was flown to Zoveng - Zenhang Lamka, my birthplace and also his home, where he was laid to rest on April 10, 2023.

We have lost more than a person. We’ve lost a brother, a mentor, a quiet giant.

🕊️💔 Rest in Power, U PaunouU Pau, Mangpha!” 🕯️🙏

You are deeply missed but never forgotten.
